is the expense of mixers and 416's and dats worth it if you're content is for broadcast and NOT theatrical?

i mean, most people have 19" tv's with tiny little speakers. is this overkill?

Overkill is subjective. Most pieces of pro audio gear will only open up possiblities for getting good audio in different situations. Even after properly used equipment gets you good base audio you still needs weeks of sweetening and mixing.

Audio for broadcast generally does not need as detailed sweetening as a theatrical broadcast but again that is still somewhat subjective. Since most of this work is in fact done in post, the better the raw audio is, the easier it is to work with. Television will hide a lot of crap but it will still show more of bad sound work then it hides.

Certainly there are places you can save a few bucks here and there from a 5 grand kit. They will involve some compremises and of course don't forget the equipment alone does get good or bad audio, the operator needs to know his stuff too. Some projects could get by with an Oktava on a painters pole going directly into the camera and nothing else, others will need more. It all depends on what you are doing.

Most local news is gathered with just a $200 dynamic mic or a $300 lav. :)
