SanDisk launches 'world's biggest SD card'
- 512 GB (as side note, 10 years ago they came out with a 512-MB card for $169.99, so capacity has doubled every year on average)
- $799 ($1.56 / GB)
- UHS-3 (guaranteed 30 MB/sec. minimum sustained write speed)
- writes up to 90 MB/sec
---
By the way, can anyone comment the reliable write speed of an SD card? For example, if a card says it can write "up to" 90 MB/sec., you couldn't shoot for long at a frame rate that outputs 95 MB/sec., could you? Is there some percentage, like 60%?
The old speed class ratings like 4, 6, and 10, allegedly guarantee a write speed of 4, 6, and 10 MB/sec. The newer speed class ratings, UHS-1 and UHS-3, guarantee 10 and 30 MB/sec. This card is UHS-3, meaning you can rely on at least 30 MB/sec. writes, at least according to the card maker. But could it possibly have a reliable sustained write speed of even more? Right now there is no higher official stamp, like UHS-5, that they could put on. So are they just putting on the highest one that they can?
The reason I ask is that we're very close to SDXC cards being enough for my average day-to-day requirements, which would be something like ProRes HQ at up to 60 fps, which would be 55 MB/sec. While you could always ask for more, this spec satisfies me 90% of the time. I could rent for the rest. If I want 4K or 120 fps RAW, I would have to balance that with the convenience and cheapness of owning a camcorder that takes just SD cards. Shooting 10-bit 4:2:2 1080p60 to SD cards is not the pinnacle of human civilization, but it is a nice golden mean.
