Hey everyone. I searched and could not find the answer to this question. When shooting a feature film, do you set the dvx for -50db or -60db in the mic gain settings? What are the advantages and disadvantages of either option? I really appreciate anyones help.

Thanks so much,

-Kris

-50!

the -60 is only for really insensitive mics like dynamic eng mics!

Any normal mic will blow your inputs at -60db... you'd discover this for yourself when it became impossible to control levels. Pro cams have a setting of -35... so that tells you something.

Even -50db is too hot for many popular mics... but at least it's manageable within reason.

I would say when shooting a feature you should hire a sound man:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

I see, I see. I have a Senny 416. still -50db?

thanks for your help,

Put it at -60db and just try it by yourself or with a friend... you'll have what you think is an okay level and then somebody steps on a dry leaf and you'll hit the reds. In case I'm not clear... Yes, -50db for mics like the 416.

The only time you will want -60 is when the mic is dead to the world without it. An example might be an EV RE50 (the regular one, not the ND). There will be few mics that require the -60db, and it will be obvious when the time comes.
