503 Manfrotto Head on a Monopod?

Hi all, would it be possible to use my 503 Manfrotto fluid head on a monopod? I currently have it attached to a Bogen tripod.

I will be using the monopod with a Canon 60d. Is there a simple sub $100 monopod I should look at, which would work well with my gear?

Thanks!

You can use the 503 head on the monopod, however, the monopod would get a little heavier and a little bulkier than if you used a 701 hdv head. I picked up a 3 stage manfrotto monopod and put a 701 head on it. Cost me $220 after free shipping from B&H. You can get the monopod itself for about $80 at B&H, however, getting a new head is always more expensive than the stick(s), so you can always try it with the 503 head and if you don't like it you can always look for another solution. Good luck!

Thanks kgimedia. I am still liking that Giottos model. Its specs and price seem great. It's lacking your freestanding legs, but I'm not sure how useful those will end up being in most situations. I'd think I'd be afraid to not have at least one hand on the monopod at all times.

That 080 belt pouch seems very interesting though. Is the idea that it stabilizes walking shots? How well does it really work?

I was scared in the beginning and would have my hands a fraction of an inch away when free standing. Now I walk away all the time. Not for minutes but several 10's of seconds.

The pouch does not work well for walking shoots but is great for 360 panning, raising the camera above a crowd and getting really stable handheld shoots. You can sort of move or glide with the pouch but at an average walking speed the camera will bounce. It is not a stabilizer it is a $14 belt pouch. That being said I freak so much when I can not find mine my wife bought me an extra for my birthday.
