$50 PAR light at... IKEA!

Keep em coming. I just bought a battery powered LED bike light. Its rather interesting, will post some pics. Im going to make a few mods to it, square casing with shoe mount so it looks like any LED light - lots of juice.

I also picked up from the hardware store (last week) a 20 bulb power cable. For the tubes I bought 20 led bulbs - similar to this http://www.ccrane.com/lights/led-light-bulbs/led-strip-lighting.aspx and this http://www.ccrane.com/lights/led-light-bulbs/cc-vivid-plus-led-light-bulb.aspx (although the bulbs here are MUCH less expensive, dont know why). Have a guy making a housing with hinged barn doors a light stand mount with reflective plate. Should come up well, then Ill make another - if it comes up I already have a few locals interested.

Is that an E26 base on that second item (the bulb)? That's pretty rare for a 12v model. Wondering why the bulbs are less expensive there (in Japan I assume from your Location)? Because they are made there in many cases ;-) Therefore none of the stupid import taxes designed to protect local markets.

LOL What a find and you thought you were being a prince of a guy for escorting your girlfriend to Ikea ...not often that you are rewarded with such a useable find .....I am going out to Ikea this week can not wait to add this litttle honey to my kit B&H sell something like this for around a grand does essentially the same thing just costs about $ 950.00 dollars more thanks for the posting and the very thorough research good to know it actually works in the real world great demo pix as well.......vl

The unit uses 50 watt Halogen bulbs, but I found an online retailer that sells 75 and 100 watt bulbs that will fit into the unit..

Thanks for sharing the tip. I'm on my way to pick one up right now. Would you mind also sharing the online retailer where you found the other higher wattage bulbs and which one is used in the picture?

Hey Karl, thanks, man. I'm heading over to Isea now to pick one or two up. Right neighborly of you for pointing it out.

Here's to hoping Ikea puts out a 1500 Watt HMI decorative lamp for under a hundred. I'll let you know what I find.

Karl, thanks for the bulb links.

Brought it home last night and stayed up till 2 am playing with it. Very hip find!

Any concern about going past the stated "Do not use any higher wattage bulb over 50 or a bunch of Vikings will burn down your village"?

Has the 75 watter been used by you over any length of time and have you seen men with helmets that have horns piling kindling wood outside you door and chasing your neighbor's daughter?

Hi all just got back from Ikea here on the Island (Hicksville) the sales person in the lighting department helped me find one of the last ones in stock saying he had not gotten a lot of calls for this item lately I just smiled and thanked him rushed home and have been amazed by the quality and depth of options that this unit allows the user to employ for various lighting situations wow the quality of workmanship is outstanding for $51.00 ......money well spent....so many situations in the past that come to mind where this little jem would have served so appropriately and in such a short set up time ...now if I can just get this mounted to a stand ....thank you so much for sharing this find with us.

I have not yet tried the 75 watt bulb in the unit. It should get here sometime this week, and when it does, I'll test it out to see how the unit handles the extra heat. From my experience with the 50 watt bulbs, it shouldn't be a big problem. However, I've said things like that before only to be proved utterly, horribly, terribly wrong... We'll see!

Just got this light about an hour ago -- awesome find. Can't wait to have the chance to really play with it. Was only able to set it up and plug it in to make sure it works so far.

Anyone know if the cookies this thing comes with are a standard size? I'll try to find out later if no one knows.

I had intended to investigate about the cookies, but I haven't gotten around to it. My gut tells me "no"... but my gut is also very hungry...

Well, the ones that come with the light are 2 inches, about 51mm, in diameter. These are not standard sizes. I might try a size D, which is 53mm and see if I can cut it to fit. Or use a smaller size. I'm not in a big hurry to do this, though, as the blinds and circles seem to give good enough patterns for my immediate needs -- which is to just break up the background a bit.

Those of you that went out and bought this light, how are you mounting it to a stand? The description on the Ikea site said it comes with ceiling mounts and all but nothing about stands although I saw the original poster had his on a stand in his posted picture. Will need to buy a special mount for the light to put it on a stand?

On page one or two of the original post "Cool Lights" discussed the use of a TVMP adaptor (stand to yoke ) they are sold in most professional lighting shops I am going down to Barbazon here in the city on Friday to pick one up (New York City) B&H Photo might very well sell the same adaptor you might give them a call as well ...do have a look at the glass wavy pattern as well everyone seems to have overlooked that one really quite beautiful.....vl

I went out to the garage and grabbed a worklight stand with a tbar and screwed it on.

My light stands have a stud with a 1/4" thread on top. I'm just sticking the light on there and bolting it down.

I picked up one at IKEA, the sales lady said if you put a higher watt bulb in it, it will trip some sort of internal switch. I"m not sure she knows what she is talking about.
Has anyone tried with the higher wattage bulb?
