50 megabytes in broadcast

I've seen this a few time that a video camera needs to be 50 megabytes for TV broadcast. Can someone explain that to me? I've seen TV shows in the past on the DVX100b and it is less. I guess this is just a standard that some networks go by and maybe some who will only except that?

So a camera like the AC130a ,which I'm thinking about getting does something like 21? Can it do 50 if you just send it out uncompressed? (if it can even do that).

Different networks have different requirements. Discovery, for example, has a rep for being one of the most strict (I think the BBC is up there too) and has guidelines regarding sensor size, compression, what percentage of footage can be below that quality threshold, etc.,. Like everything else in life it's negotiable. If you bring something absolutely stellar to them they'll but it even if was a shot on a 7D.

If you go HDMI out into an external recorder I'm sure you could record in an 'approved' codec but the sensor size might officially make the grade though.

you also have to bear in mind that the spec is there to keep quality up throught the post and delivery chain and not just at the shooting end!
