I'm surprised this hasn't happened earlier. The only way to get everyone to convert to BD is to make players really cheap.

Have you noticed also that new releases of movies have better content on the BD version, and meager if any on the SD version. Part of this is due to available space I realize, but probably also a concerted effort to encourage BD purchase.
