hello. i have a clip that is 25 fps and 2 minutes. i want to pick random frames from the 25 frames per second and make it 5 frames per second, and still i want my clip to be 2 minutes. is there any effects for this either in motion or fcp? that would be great!

answers very much appreciated, thanx...

The Speed tool in FCP or the Speed behaviors in Motion would be one place to start. Going to take a lot of experimentation however so be ready to spend some time on it(no pun intended).

As Noah says... experimentation is your key.

What do you REALLY want to do? Take 5 frames a second and hold each frame for 5 frames? How 'random'? Across time?

Remember... unique ideas take unique actions. You could take the time to make every 5th frame a still and import them at 5 frames length. Then you'll have your shot.

If you are looking for ADAPTIVE work you could try taking every 5th frame (cut out and remove every 2-5 frames) and then changing the speed to 25. Make sure frame blending is on. There is also a thing called ADAPTIVE retiming. Used to only be available in Shake. Might be in FCP and Motion now... not sure.

Adaptive will creatively create (hee) inbetween frames guessing at the correct motion. Sometimes with GREAT results!!

thanks for replies.
well i basically wondered if there was some effect that would make my task easy. like a tool that would pic 5 random frames from all the 25 and then make the 5 frames to fill one sec...
but maybe there is no easy way... i will try some tweeking on the speed tools for a starter..

thanks anyway..

If you really want random frames, you might try the following as an alternative to creating stills, exporting them and then reimporting them: 1) put your 2 minute clip in its own sequence, 2) select the 600 random frames you want (1/5th of the 3000 frames in the initial 2 minute clip), 3) use the razor blade tool on both sides of each frame you selected, 3) delete all the other frames from the timeline, 4) use the close gaps command on this timeline so remaining frames have no gaps, 5) select all the remaining frames and change speed to 20%, so the 600 frames remaining in the timeline will each play for 5 seconds and the timeline will have a duration of 2 minutes. You could then use this sequence in a larger project, or export it as a separate clip you can use in a larger project.

This may or may not be easier that creating stills, but this is the way I would do what you want to do. It really shouldn't take that long--and would be worth the effort if this effect is important to your project.
