5 C's of Cinematography

I just ordered that book, since a lot of ppl everywhere seem to endorse it. I was just wondering something though... possibly someone who has it already may know the answer to my question. I'm interested in things like the 180 degree rule...rule of thirds and establishing shots and other types of camera lingo deciphering what types of shots are called what and why they are used.

My question is does this book cover that by chance ? Or perhaps you have some recommendations of what books do. Thanks for any help : )

Yes its all in there: Action axis, rule of thirds, master shots, angles, editing rules...etc! The five C's is invaluable. Some of the terms are slightly colloquial and may change based on the region you are filming in, but the basic ideas are universal. Also note, many of the things covered are traditional Hollywood rules. Many can be broken, but without the foundation learned from books like these, a cinematographer is very limited in potential.

It is not an amazing read and may take some effort to complete it, but I have found it very helpful.

Hey HenryDee,

I haven't read the filmmakers handbook, but i can tell you that the 5 C's is one of the best books you can get. You won't be disappointed.

5 C's >> Shot by Shot.

Shot by Shot is still a worthwhile read tho.

The Handbook covers pretty much everything but its a little more technical. It's a great grounding in all the concepts and terminology.

HenryDee,

I will recommend "In the Blink of an Eye". It's a book about editing, written by Walter Murch. I learned a lot about shooting after reading and understanding this book.
