5.1 on CD-R for testing

Hey all,

Came across an article at http://www.5dot1.com in the "Articles" section talking about how to burn Dolby Digital 5.1 audio files to CD-R(W) so that 5.1 mixes can be tested on a home surround system before baking a DVD (and creating a coaster if the 5.1 mix is no good).

I followed the instructions to the 'T' and while my home theater system read the CD-RW disc OK, it interpreted the 5.1 file as PCM audio and played back noise even though the system has a Dolby Digital decoder.

Has anyone been able to get this to work?

Hey Todd,

Thanks for the pointer to the article. Much faster than my test method -- I took all the files into Vegas, did a rough mix then burned it to a DVD encoded with AC3.

As far as the problem you're having, one thing stood out in the article that may be stating the obvious, but here goes anyway:

You are playing the CD in your DVD player, right? The article says not to try playing it in your CD player. But I also see he warns that even when playing through the DVD player, you may still get an "as is" playback.

Happy Holidays!

Hi Phil,

Happy Holidays! Thanks for the reply--I was indeed playing through the DVD player with no luck. Have you tested the method in this article to see if it works for you?

Hey Todd,

I figured you had, but it never hurts to check.

I'm going to be giving it a try this week. I'll let you know what I find.

I always test on a DVD-RW. I already have too many coasters lying around. ;D
