So I am going to buy some filters for my Cavision matte box which is 4x4. I have 2 filter holders that are 4x4, and one that is 4x5.565. I will be using these on my HVX and was wondering if I should by one of the following filters in the 4x5 format, and if so, does it matter which one? Or will sticking with just the 4x4's be fine?

These are Glass filters sold by Cavision-

4x4 options:
Polarizer
Star
Soft Focus
Soft Mist Black
G. Blue
G. Green
G. Orange
G. Red
G. ND
Solid ND (.3, .6, .9)

4x5.565 options:
Skin Tone Enhanser
Soft Mist Black (1,2,3)
G. Blue
G. Orange
G. ND
Solid ND (.3, .6, .9)

The only situation I can think of where the 4x5.565 would offer an advantage is when using grad filters, in which case the extra size would provide more flexibility in positioning it. If it were me, I'd go with 4x4s for except for grads.

Thanks. So it sounds like there is not a big deal in using the 4x4's. Except that the 5x5.65 would give me more room to slide around if I needed to adjust things with the grad filters.

I', definately going to get the ND's, Pol, and ND grad, I was also thinking about the Blue and orange Grads- although they probably will not be used a ton, I think they'll come in handy for those must have shots- ie extra pop in the sunset ...

<ND's, Pol, and ND grad>

Those are the workhorses. I've owned a whole assortment of filters over the years -- low contrast, soft contrast, pro mists, various colors -- but the only ones I've ever gotten any use out of are the NDs (which I use constantly) and occasional PL.

For rotating work with grads or polarizers you'd typically choose the 4x4.

Additionally, if you have the Cavision 4x4 mattebox, the 4x5.65 filter holder may not properly lock into the bearing channels.

I'd go 4x4 for your rotating stage needs.

So it is sounding like there really isn't a big difference between the 4x4 and the 4x5.65- at least when using the 4x4 matte box. In that case, I'll save a couple bucks by just sticking with the 4x4's. I just want to be sure that I will not have to re-buy a filter in the 4x5.65 size to use with the HVX.
