4k Editing Upgrades

Hi all,

My current system is:

CPU: i7 4770
RAM: 32GB
GPU: NVIDIA 780ti

It's struggling with 4k playback. I'm probably going to downscale to 1080 anyway for the time being - but it would be good if I could still shoot in 4k and edit in a 1080 sequence smoothly.

My question is - what should I upgrade? I edit in Premiere Pro CC. Do I go for another 780ti in SLI or a new better GPU? Or do I buy a new motherboard and processor? My budget is £750. I could probably get a 6-core Xeon for that. But is a new processor better than a new GPU?

Appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks!

I am able to edit 4k on my Dell XPS if I recall it is an i7 sandy bridge with 16gb of RAM. The trick I use is to edit in 1/4 resolution for smooth playback. Sometimes I can go 1/2 res and get 4k to play smootly.

I assume you want to view 4K all the time on a 4K monitor is why your looking at a higher hardware spec?

Hi, thanks for the reply.

Yes that's correct! Just not sure which part to upgrade.

Is anybody else able to contribute to this? Thanks. I've been reading online that GPU power is more important for 4k now, when it comes to rendering.

Hi, thanks for your reply :)

I currently have just an SSD with OS and apps installed, and a 2TB Caviar Black which is quickly filling up. On there I place all my recording media. I also store my cache files "alongside original".

I realise it's not the best setup, which is why I'd like to take my storage and workflow a little more seriously and I'm looking into a RAID 5 setup in the near future.

I used to have the gtx 760 2gb with i5 3570k and I was able to edit my gh4 4k files at 1/2 res on pp. I now just recently upgraded to new psu and the new gtx 970 and its alloott better from what I have seen, Id go for the 980 tho because it has more cuda cores and text mapping units ect. Also im guessing the i7 hex core would help somewhat too.

I'm having serious issues editing in 4k with a "beefy" system on the latest CC 2014 update. I'm experiencing "tearing" and frame jumping on groups of frames...and I have confirmed that files on the card are NOT corrupt (Sandisk 16gb SDHC I 95mbs - class 10) My camera is a GH4.

my specs:

Windows 7 ultimate (64bit)
Gigabyte Ga z97x gaming 7 mobo
coolermaster CPU cooler
Intel core i7 4771 @3.5ghz
GeForce GTX 780ti (344.75)
16GB corsair DDR3 ram
Samsung 1tb SSD system drive
corsair 7x750m PSU

I have included some screenies on what I am running into. This is a new system with the latest NVIDIA drivers. Someone suggested that I roll back to an older july timeframe driver (340.52) for which adobe CC2014 was developed against.....I'm trying that now.
