4K Conversion

I am sure this topic has been discussed before BUT I need to know the best way to convert 4k from a Sony X70 and a Pany GH4.

For editing, I need 1920/1080P. For distribution to DVD, my supplier is asking for a "Master". For viewing at a large venue, I need to put HD onto several "Thumb drives"

I appreciate your advice!

IMO, the best solution is to import your 4K files natively into your NLE - edit - and then export a HD master from the 4K or HD timeline (you will have a choice of various high-quality formats).

You will preserve as much quality as possible this way.

If you must convert to HD before editing then you can still do the same thing above, but make sure to put your 4K clips into a 1080p timeline. There is also free and paid third-party software that can do the job as well, and export your clips individually or "stitch" them together into one file.

Captured in 3860 / 2160 30P 100Mbps. I am asking you guys to advise the destination info! I know what I have done in the past but I have not been happy with the outcome.

Thanks

It's difficult to provide you any more information without knowing what you have done in the past, which software you use or have access to, and which OS you're on.

But as mentioned, you want to edit your 4K files straight from the camera for the best results/quality (especially for SD DVDs) and then export accordingly. You're already working with limited resources (footage), so I would limit the transcoding.

Personally, I would process everything in FCP X and/or Compressor, but that might not work for you and the instructions/suggestions I would provide would be irrelevant.

Who's the DVD supplier? Most companies want a DVD master, IE you've done the work of making the DVD yourself.

That said, Resolve is pretty good at giving you what you need

I edit in Edius 8 Workgroup. Been using Windows 10 since last year. My computer is a HP 8400 Workstation with dual 4 core Zeon processors and 32gb of ram. It is old and not capable of digesting 4K so I must dumb it down to HD in order to edit. I am toooo old to invest in a new computer.

I have used a couple of programs for down converting but I was not impressed. I am looking for new suggestions (be nice).

Dan,

With dual 4 core Xeon processors and the RAM you have, the computer should be able to handle the 4K UHD files your camera created, especially if you shot in MP4 format. It may be that Edius 8 may not be able to handle it. My computer is a Dell with one Intel Core i7 (4th gen), I edit in Pinnacle Studio 19.1.3.320 on a 4K timeline and from there render out to just about anything I want. Version 21 is out now and I received an email offer for $89.95 for the Ultimate version 9 days ago.

Check with Edius and see if version 8 should handle it.

Possible tip: If you shot in AVCHD try converting to MP4 and see if that makes a difference. I author to standard DVD and then from the same timeline render out to an MP4 1920x1080 file I can copy to a thumb drive. The MP4 file is cross platform and can play on either Windows or MAC.

Good luck.
