4K Cellphones Available in 2013

Yeah I found that googling and reading for about 15mins. Would be more helpful to readers to include a link, that's all.

which strongly suggests that it will be used in smartphones with 8 megapixel smartphone cameras to record extremely high quality video.

Knowing our luck though, by the time these chips make it to phones they'll have moved past the perfect 8MP cameras and on to 12MP cameras where they will have to do line skipping to give us 4K... with lot of aliasing and moire. ;P

The technology may not be limited to just smart phones. By the summer of 2013 we may also be seeing a lot of consumer and prosumer cameras that have the ability to record 4K video. A lot of these cameras already have 4K sensors and processors but simply lack the ability to record 4K video. Now that the 4K chips are available prototypes can be constructed.

with all due respect... same bs arguments every time. It starts like this yes... but then those issues are solved. Just like they have been on previous sensors. Welcome to the future.
I don't think you understand, there is nothing you can shoot on a cellphone that is worth going to 4K for. I'm not talking about absolute image quality, we already have stand-outs such as Noika's 808 that have a 41mp sensor that it downsamples it's video from in real time, but actual content.

What I'm trying to say is - 4K only makes sense when you have the production values to make 4K actually look better than HD, which can look pretty damn good itself with the right setup. 4K on cellphones won't make the garbage people shoot on their phones worth looking at over HD. If you can't make good use of something, you shouldn't use it at all; 4K belongs in film production.

Why does 4K only belong in film production? For example, on a fixed lens device like cell phone 4K could be great for providing a quality digital zoom if you desired output is HD.

4K is useful for anything where post-digital zoom can be applied in the NLE and with any camera that shoots 4K, but if you mean digital zoom right off a 4K sensor, well that's already being done in spades. The Nokia 808 is kind of an exception at this point, but with the 41mp sensor it actually gets quite a bit of zoom range using only digital zoom at 1080p.
As for other cell phones, I don't think there any that actually use optical zoom, so all of them technically downsample from a high-res sensor.

"With all due respect" =/= an actually-respectful comment.

You can shoot absolute crap with any camera, any lens system, any sensor, any resolution, and that's what's going to be shot on almost every phone camera.

It's what's in font of the lens which makes footage "high-quality." Good footage comes from technique, not from resolution. (It also helps to have a non-crap codec which can record it without ripping it to shreds.)

Resolution does not equal quality. Resolution equals detail. Nothing more, nothing less.

Or to quote Ansel Adams... There is nothing worse than a sharp image of a fuzzy concept.

Posted by a former Red One owner who has shot plenty of 4K material. Some of it good, some of it crap.
