4K Canon 44.7MP DSLR Due at End of August ?

Another source has sent me info (thanks) on Canon’s next DSLR, stating that it won’t be the 75MP+ behemoth undergoing field testing now. Instead, the source claims Canon will launch a DSLR with a 44.7MP sensor (8192 x 5462) that provides 4K cinema capability without bayer artifacts, and can do UHDTV with a slight crop. The challenge with the new camera has been to develop the processing speed to stream the video at full bandwidth while not chewing through batteries. The source further tells me that this is actually a conservative move for Canon; however, it s more important to provide solid image quality in the dynamic range area with no banding than to load up the resolution, as would be the case with the 75MP+ camera that is also being tested.
Additionally, the camera will have a dedicated port for attaching an electronic viewfinder. While the source wasn’t exactly clear on this point, it seems that this may be some type of proprietary connection for attaching a viewfinder or monitor that is not an HDMI or SDI output.
Given the emphasis on 4K video capture and other features, it seems like this Canon DSLR will be heavy on the video features and may be the next foray into the EOS Cinema lineup – possibly a step up from the 1D C and the second camera in this DSLR-style Cinema camera.
Of course, that’s not to say we won’t see that 75MP+ DSLR at some point in the future (or at least a later generation of that sensor); however, for now, the word is that this 44.7MP DSLR will be announced at the end of August.
This is a new source; however, the logic of this camera and the info provided seems reasonable and a little more in line with recent rumors of the next pro DSLR from Canon. If this is the real deal, expect to hear lots more about it over the next few weeks leading up to the announcement.

I hope they will go for an EOS CX00 camera design... With slowmotion, 4K cinema capability without bayer artifacts, more than 8b or possibity to output raw with a dynamic range greater than the current eos C serie (sup to 12 with better highlight rolloff)

I will be sold for that, my dream camera

I don't know whether or not this story is true, but a 8192x5462 sensor makes a huge amount of sense for a video/stills sensor, and it's worth considering why. 8192 is 2x4096, and that's the starting figure. For stills use, 5462 vertically then gives a 3:2 frame, hence that. For quad-HD, it's likely to be horizontally cropped to 4x1920 (7680) and vertically cropped to 4320 to give 16:9. For 4k cinema, similarly 8192x4320.

But the point is that for maybe the first time we have a sensor that will perform optimally in all still and video modes. High enough photosite count for good stills. Minimal processing required to give full res 4k or quad-HD. (Simple 2x2 block read out, as the C300). Same for full 1920x1080 simply by pixel binning 4x4 blocks.

The real point with chip resolutions is that more doesn't always mean better - there are certain "golden numbers" and what is rumoured here is exactly that. That's the sensor side - what the recording codec for 4k video (in a DSLR!?) will be is another matter......

Canon still doesn't have a 4k codec except for mjpeg. We'll have to wait and see. They do have their new dv digic which should support 60P and hopefully 10bit.

I would be excited, but we all know now what Canon will charge for such a DSLR. In the day and age of the 4K for for 4K BMCPC, the 4k capable for 7K FS700 and the F5 body going for just a bit more than a 1DC body, my response to Canon would be: a 15 to 20 thousand dollar DSLR? Thanks but no thanks.

Ha, maybe. Probably. The 1D-C is pretty cool. But there are plenty of options for films and other things. Sad thing, is no built in way to accurately gauge exposure. So, it's got to connect an EVF which adds weight and size when you want to get more accurate, kind of killing some of the whole small form factor. Still easier to slug around in a backpack than other cameras though. Good travel partner. With any camera in the wild, exposure is important, but especially anything under 12stops DR or 8bit, and 1D-C is pretty much both. Though, if you have control over your lighting, than no worries, the 1D-C looks great.

It is still arguably the best at what it is. Whatever it is.

Why 10-bit? I think 12- or even 14-bit would be better.

For processed video, 10 bit is more than enough. The bit depth is less likely to be the limiting factor than the noise figures.

It's different for RAW - when you definitely do need at least 12 bit - and one way to think of it is that it's the act of processing that brings the noise etc up so that it's more significant than the least significant digit in a 10 bit system. (For that matter, for most cameras it will be more than the least significant digit in an 8 bit system.)

And even 12 bit (let alone 14!) RAW from a 44.7MP sensor doesn't bear thinking about in terms of datarates and file sizes. :) Bad enough from something like an F5 with an 8 MP sensor.......)

I don't see where this camera would fit in the Canon camera line up. To be competitive in the photo world it would have to face the D800 at $ 3000. With 44 megapixel it could cost let say double the Nikon for $ 6/7. But then it would be about half the price of the 1dc!!! The only solution would be like the 1dx/1dc line-up. That is have a photo camera with hd and another one with 4k for the video line.

I don't know that it need be that much of a problem. With onboard debayer and then the equivalent of CineForm RAW encoding, data rates could be kept to under 75 MBps at 24p.

They could just drop the 1dc/1dx line altogether and replace it with this new camera.

They might drop the 1dc but the 1Dx is their flagship still camera. No way they are dropping it for "4k". It takes a ton of trust to get pro sports photographers to swtich from what is working for them right now. The 1Dx is the best Canon has ever made and it was built around lower resolution given the still market demands right now.

The 1DX is a beast. The 1DC is the beast unleashed, but still feels like a hack in video terms. Really love it, but feel like it is the child with talent that sleeps in. Just lacking Waveforms and a customizable picture style that can intercut with C-log (cinema cameras usually have a paint box, but this just has C-log, a customizable picture style with C-Log color palette? Genius. ). And maybe one or two more customizable settings for the user buttons. Would be nice to have raw. We know it could handle it, haha. But in most situations, the image is great.
