48 Hour MPEG Render?

Should it take 48 hours to render an 2 hour MPEG-2 using Compressor?

I just finished a concert DVD. The concert ended up cutting to about 2 hours in length. I rendered out of FCP using Compressor, with a 6.0 Average MBPS, 7.5 Max.

I have a MacBook Pro with the intel dual core. 1 gb of RAM.

The MPEG rendered out, is on DVD, and looks great, but it took about 2 days. That seems a little long to me. Is it? Could something be wrong with my comp/workflow?

Thanks.

Damn, and I was angry with an 18 hour render. When I had a similiar problem, someone suggested it could be from using effects, (if you didn't use any, than this is a serious problem). Like if you color corrected it, especially if you used third party effects. Then it basically would be normal for how long it was

Well, did you have one hard disk or two?

If you rendered using only one hard drive, then render times will be longer:

(1)Read data
(2) Compress
(3) Write data

with 2 drives:

(1)Read data & write last data chunk
(2)Compress
(3)Write data & read next chunk of data

Also generally more effects layers that you add the longer the render times.

But 48hrs seems odd, on my dual core AMD64 with 2G ram, working on 2 hr HDV to DVD (with 4 layers of effects) only took around 6~8 hours.

Tips to speed up (other than using network rendering)

Make sure you give your HDD a good defrag before any major rendering
Don't have any other application running, kill all non essential apps(msn mesenger)
Use two drives, one as your source, one as your target.
Get as much ram as possible
Get as much cores as possible

You don't have to use THE highest render settings, its about knowing to use your settings wisely.
