$400 Editing PC

I use a late 2008 macbook as my main machine. When I cut video I do it at work on a PC. But at home I need to cut some personal projects every so often. My macbook is horribly slow for editing. Right now I have a 24 hour render going for a 17 minute video. Nothing extreme involved, just a B&W filter, levels and a uprez from DV to 720p.

My macbook is also that "special model" that lacks a firewire port. Which makes it impossible to capture any of my old DV tapes or HDV tapes.

I've built PC's in the past but it's been years so I don't know what is good out there right now. I've got to keep the budget around $400 or less. I don't need anything extreme. Luckily I have a Microcenter near by that has a lot of deals and good prices. About on par with newegg. They have deals going on right now where you buy an AMD processer and get a motherboard for free or around $30. I did something like that a few years back when I built my girlfriends PC. The motherboard she got was loaded, usb3, HDMi, firewire, eSATA, AMD graphics on board, etc. Coupled with a quad core Athlon II chip.

The PC I use at work is a 6 core AMD chip and it feels just fine. So I'm thinking maybe an AMD chip would be the way to go again. But I'm also seriously considering an i5.

I've also got basics like an LCD display, keyboard, mouse, I even have an older sata hard drive I think I can throw in. So $300-400 for everything else shouldn't be too crazy.

I'd like to find a motherboard that has firewire, usb3 and video (HDMI) out. I don't know if there are any Intel based boards that have all that for less than a $100. Does anyone have any suggestions?

in that price range, go amd, don't look back.

don't get more than 8GB fast RAM.

don't get an SSD, don't get a 5200rpm hard drive or anything with eco on it.

get an extra fan or 2 in a nicely ventilated case, or a case that has good airflow. <- this actually improves performance a lot.

you can get firewire pci cards for almost nothing.

don't buy a new motherboard without usb 3.

Awesome! Thanks for your suggestions and input everyone. This sounds like a good route to take. Considering I edit every day at work on a 6-core AMD setup using CS6 it's a good and proven CPU for me. Ram is cheap enough these days and I can find a decent case at the store for $50. So I should be well on budget.
