I am about to shoot a four person roundtable discussion and want the best sound on each channel. I have 2 sennheiser wireless lavs and a mkh416, but would like something that gives the same quality on each person. Any suggestions as to what to rent, it could be wired lavs, boundary mics or directional, I just want the best separation and highest speech quality. I'll run it through a mixer and into logic pro.

thanks, soren

wire them all if you are working with 2 cameras or at least the 2 you know who will talk the most and keep the bboom following the conversation .
check what can you do with room ambience as the table doesnt help much as it reflect , if you can put table cloth of some sort and sound blanket under it will help allot .
pzms also could work

you could also be lazy and use 1 or 2 sanken cub boundry mics (depending on the room).

booming a long discussion would be hard as would mixing down 4 lavs on the fly (people do it all the time, but it isn't as easy as it looks). If you can mix it down in post.... 4 MATCHING lavs may be the way to go.

brand, type?

brand, type?

Thanks Oleg and Mike,

I'll dampen the room and the table, use wired mics and 2 HVX's, and record 4 independent tracks 24/48 into Logic Pro, plus split them into the hvx's, just to make syncing easier. Last question: I can rent DPA 4660's or Countryman B6. Any experience with those or others? -I myself have a matched pair of DPA 4006 which are great omnis, but 4 guys talking is a different kettle of fish.:bath:

if the dpa mics you have match well with those you have available for rent, you may be able to use your two and just rent 2 more. I don't know those mics well enough to tell you.

4060 is a lavaliere , the 40o6 is 19mm diaphragm omni mic - sorry these are totally different mics , complete different sound
the 4006 would be very noticeable on the guys shirt ;-)

Lavalier

The term lavalier may refer to:
  • A lavalier is a pendant with one stone, suspended from a necklace. In the Greek system, it refers specifically to a necklace bearing a sorority's letters.
  • A lavalier is a small electret or dynamic microphone used for television, theatre, and public speaking applications, in order to allow hands-free operation.
The origin of the term goes back to the type of jewelry pendant popularized by the Duchesse de la Vallière, a mistress ot King Louis the 14th. Within the fashion world, the name was eventually shortened to "lavaliere". Microphone manufacturers adopted the term for microphones worn around the neck - like a pendant. As they got smaller, so did the names. Called "Lavs" by the industry, some lavalier microphones today are almost too small to be seen.

So it is really not that far off base.... Have you seen the old 70s lavaliers?

yes - so , he can stick the 4006 inside the people trouses also - it could give some impact on the audience
by the way ther are some dpas 402x which could work in 70 tis stile tv shotes :)
