4 channel cam...

This isn't really related to FCP but I couldn't figure out which forum to put it into. Plus I trust people's answers in this one.

I feel kinda dumb asking this question actually. In all the time I have been looking at the different HD/HDV cameras I haven't payed close enough attention to the audio side of it.

Question?: Is there currently a small format (most likely HDV) camera that handles 4 separate channels of audio? If so which ones and does it involve adapters? I know that there are adapters like the one for the XL-2 that allow for 4 inputs. But is there a way to record to DV/HDV with four separate channels?

Thanks for any info.

Not really. The HVX technically has four channels but two of those are always the onboard camera mics. If you want complex multichannel audio recording you want an outboard piece of audio gear like a Deva recorder.

The HVX records four channels, two from the onboard microphone and two from the XLRs. The HPX500 can do four channels from four XLR ports.

The tiny HSC1U actually has six microphones built-in, it records dolby digital 5.1 surround sound.

I think the Canon XLH1 allows for four channels of extremely compressed audio; didn't the XL1/XL2 also allow for four channels?

Can't think of any others off the top of my head.
