4.73g dvd...how much time?

Hello fellow Vegas users,

I would like to know approx. how much time I can expect to get on a single 4.73g dvd with just straight cuts, minidv, avi’s/veg’s. This is not for a finished piece, just for some practice burns.

Thanks in advance,
Bruce

When I use the standard DVDA 24p template (I think it averages 6mbps/max 8mbps) in Vegas 5 to render my DVX 24p files I can get up to 90 mins of video on a standard DVD. These are 23.97 fps video files so they use less space than 29.97 fps files. So if you're shooting 60i assume about 25% less (?) time using a similar encoding rate.

Depending con compression you can get a lot out of it. I had to do 6 hours once, but it looks horrible. I think you can get around 2 hours of nice quality on there.

I forgot to mention, I would like no further compression than already exists. It is a 24pa project DVD videodisc. I just want to max out a 4.73 so I can preview the video to people for some valuable feedback, then go back and finish the shoot. My current .veg is 57 minutes with about 150 straight cuts.
24Peter, 90 minutes would be awesome!

Well like I said, that's using the standard DVDA 24p template in Vegas to compress. You have to use SOME compression or you can't make a DVD - the DVD standard is mpeg2 encoded -and thus compressed - video. You could just copy .avi files to a DVD but then you couldn't play them back like a regular DVD.
You can do your own tests - some like higher encoding rates though I think 8mbps is the max for the DVD standard. And do your own math: 8mbps = 1MBps = 60MB per minute X 57 mins = (approx) 3.5GB.
