4:3 HD setup/timeline possible?

Hello youse,

This is funny. I client of mine shot some instructional footage on her DSLR in an 90 degrees angle, so on my FCP I have to rotate everything by 270 (or -90) degrees to get it upright again. More over, she shot it in 720-30fps interlace. So after I rotate it there is too much room on the left and right side of the image.

I tried cropping in FCP but it just crops the image, not the black space.

Then I tried cropping in Compressor but it just squashes my image.

So would I be able to produce a manual timeline with whatever margins I want?

Or are there any other alternatives?

Thanks alot!

Correction... ok I'm not a 100% sure if the footage was shot on HD or not, but on a SD timeline the footage deteriorates from the raw footage quite a bit, even after exporting to QT. But on a HDV timeline it looks great.

Updates

1 - it was shot on HD

2 - so I figured out how to create my own easy setup, but after a few tries the only setup that recreates the HD quality for the footage is still wide screen 16:9, still lots of empty space on the sides.

Nevermind I figured it out... 1440x1080

thanks for reading anyways haha - but if you have any comments to contribute please do.

Which DSLR records in 1440 x 1080? This sounds like HDV (tape) to me.

Be careful, did you import the footage to an existing timeline that already had other footage on it? Then the resolution of the timeline won't be adjusted to new footage and FCP will do some really weird stuff then. If this is the case, create new project, with new empty timeline and import the DSLR footage again and see what happens.

Its a Nikon D90.. I researched it and it shoots 1280x720, but the resulting footage, but... I dont know.. Im confused...

it shoots on AVI. if anyone can tell me which timeline/setup I should be using that woudnt resultin aspect ratio distortion, much appreciated!

Once I imported it the item properties -> formats say it is 640x424, so I didn't think it was HD.

But again, once on a HD timeline, it loks much better

Try converting to ProRes422 or LT first, then import to new timeline. Normally the timeline should adjust resolution to clip automatically but I never worked with 1280x720, only with GH1 1920x1080 and that works fine after converting to ProRes.

Try iMovie, it may convert it to apple intermediare codec which may solve your problem too. I will try to duplicate your problem tomorrow by importing 1280x720, I never worked with that resolution before, I went from SD directly to FHD and skipped the 720!
