I'm not planning on going anamorphic - so I was wondering if the Chrosziel 3x3 Sunshade has any downside ie. vignetting at wide angle etc.? The box is cheaper and so are the 3x3 filters. Is anyone else using 3x3? Thanks
3x3 matteboxes work just fine, and are actually a little easier to handle due to their smaller size and weight. Important for handheld.
No vingetting at all.
There is a tendancy for many to say 4x4 is best, but there is actually no reason.
There are different size mattebox\sunshades, because there are many different cameras.
Biggest is not always best, besides, I think most want a 4x4 for the "look cool" effect, rather than any functional purpose.
A manufacturer (you know who you are) once tried to say on these forums that 3x3 filters where "hard" to find...compleatly wrong information, thereby I suppose, trying to push their 4x4 mattebox.
If you want to pose your DVX on a tripod, and say look what I have....get a 4x4.
If you want to "use" your DVX to shoot, get a 3x3.
thanks Pookie - very usefull.Hmmm... the Cavision looks cool - anyone know the street price? I've used the Chrosziel 4x4 with all the extras and really loved it, but thought it was overkill for a DVX - the point of the DVX is it isn't the size of a Betacam SP rig - so I'm happy to go 3x3. I'm so far serious about this little rig - http://www.mediumblend.com/abelstore/customer/product.php?productid=11&cat=12&page=2
anyone got one?

Thanks Nick - I am actually going for grads to get more control over the sky in the desert along the mexican border - it's surprisingly uncool how the sky blows out all the time there - time for a little hollywood makeover. This is why the Cinetactics may not be the right choice - I can't see how I can fine tune the position of grads - and of course a polarizer is a no go without rotation. I also want to get away from the "traffic/MB mexicali" look with everything blown out and yellow. Our initial testing showed this made everything in frame look like a drug dealer or a place to hide drug dealers. Our film is about avoiding that stereotype. Oh dear I'm rambling again...sorry.
Anyway - anyone else got a 3x3 they like? Or a really cheap (not Cokin) way to strap on a coupla grads?
Well, if your just using the matte box for the filters, did you ever think of just buying a few 'screw on' type filters. If you dont need to worry about the sunshade aspect of the matte box, than this would work...
A good idea - but grads are usually square (to put the line of graduation along the horizontal). The unusual part is that the cheapest mattebox with moveable filter holders I have found is a 4x4 - check this out http://www.2filter.com/prices/products/format44.html
Anyone seen one of these kickin' 'round?
Nick - you are either up very late rendering a film or you have no life - cool either way It's 1:29 AM in Texas
Ha! its 11:30 here ;D ... I'm outta school and I anit got **** to do. But hey, all great filmers are night owls ...Just look at Robert Rodriguez (His doc on the 'once upon a time in mexico' dvd) ...But if you do catch me online at 2:00 to 4:00am on a weekend, then you can call me out on it, cause I'm either real bored or drunk ;D
I use the 3 x 3 Cavision and love it; in order to rotate the 'rotating stage' however, you must insert a filter from the bottom due to the onboard mic being in the way; I have NEVER been in a situation that warranted rotating a filter (such as a polorizer or grad).
Hey John, if you have to load from the bottom does that mean that you will be limited to the degree of rotation with the rotating filter?
If uncertain, is there any way you could test this and report the results? I too am in the market for a Matte Box and am considering the 3x3 ....

Actually it's a DVX100 design flaw, not a Cavision design flaw.

I've recently gotten the Cavision 3x3 mattebox and when i check on an underscan monitor, it vignettes like nobody's business (and i m not talking about the rotating stage)! i can even see a little bit on the overscan LCD screen; mostly on the bottom and top right corner...damn. Anybody have this problem? Btw, the step up adapter AR8572 already vignettes on its own. What should I do?
