3op mix 60i

hey everyone, ok so i shot an event with my xl2 the setup with 60i and the event with 30p. I edited the project with a 29.97 timeline with no fields and then exported the video in using no fields (progressive) i used that exported file to encode in encore dvd. i tried encoding it using progressive but the sections of the dvd that were shot using 60i look jumpy when watched on a sstand alone dvd player on a television (fine on a computer monitor which is progressive anyway) if i encode it using lower field will my progrossive footage look ok?

is it only ok to encode progressive footage as lower field but not lower field as progressive and why?

yes.. what you said is correct...

becuase interlaced images will have differentiating fields it will record the lower field and the upper feild 1-60th of a sec apart. meaning the image will likely have changed between that time.. when you play it back interlaced you wont notice because it plays one feild and then the other very quickly in the same amount of time and order they were recorded in.. if you play it back progressive.. it plays both feilds at once.. and they wont line up to make a solid still image unless there was no movement in the shot at all. so then it will look twittery.. playing progressive back as interlaced just plays the lower field for 1 60th then the upper field for 1 60th instead of playing them both at once for 1 30 th.. which is ok becuase at 1/60 th of a sec between the two, you eye makes them into a solid image.. similar to interlaced recording. there just wont be any movement for 1/30 th .. which is good because thats how long the prgressive frame should be displayed.... 1 30th

again though.. if there is SUPPOSED to be movement in that 1 30th or 2 60ths playing back 2 iterlaced fields.. and there is not .. it will show the interlaced artifacts.

hope that makes sense for ya. :)
