Here is my comparison of a 3d character (Penny from "Bolt". An execellent movie.) and halved with a pic I found on the web.
Proportions.

The human girl picture I found while searching hairstyles on google. The Penny character has the same part in her hair also as the real girl.

I'm having a look at manga drawing to get a better idea of the proportions creating a toon character.
I thought this was pretty cool. I've tried that on my pen tablet. (I think I'm better with a pencil and paper.)
and in side view.

Lots of articles on the subject via google
and here. Not much specifically on conventional 3D characters like Pixar and Disney.
Although I think manga is very similar with a few tweaks.

And a good article here

I find this subject interesting so maybe someone else will also.

It's a shame all of the interest has gone from the 3D section. The interest in 3D hasn't gone, the interest in posting it here has gone.
Okay, I'm done too.

I think you'll have much more success on this topic on a board dedicated to animation and visual effects. Try VFXTalk, lots of good conversation going on over there.

Awesome, thanks Dan. It can be frustrating sometimes. :)
edit:// I joined. The VFX entries are cool.

Ah that VFXTalk looks cool.

For 3D my favorite board is CGTalk

I agree that you just may not find that much active discussion on those topics here, just as you won't find much on CGTalk about live production techniques/equipment.

CGTalk is a bit intimidating. All of the pros hang out there. Even the start up page on their site is intimidating.
At first glance I dropped a jaw. :)

I joined up under GordT. Maybe I'll bump into you there down the road.

Thanks mate.

WOW! I needed this. Thanks Chuck.

Nothing to do with 3d animation directly. BUT getting to the roots of it, this short series is cool.
Before any animation, you need a character that fits the story, right? This is part of the learning process for me.

Gord, thank you for these links. I had no idea that Feng had his own YouTube channel. I've loved his work for quite a while and have all of his Gnomon DVD's. Going to spend most of today diving into his youtube channel. Thanks!

I agree, it can be intimidating there and some of the pro's are pretty harsh if they think a question is dumb. But, oh my the talent is great there!

Trying to learn this by experimenting. I don't even know the fundamentals of drawing yet nor have the talent nor the time to learn.
Trying to find a quick way to get some toon characters designed myself.

Here's another test I did with the Penny/Real comparison to get a sense of the proportions again.

They still both fall into 'thirds' although the Penny characters falls into different parts of the thirds. (In some cases I cheated and made 1/4rs but really it's 3rds if redrawn properly.)

Any comments/tips are welcome. I have no idea what I'm doing yet.
