3D sound design

I know there are some programs out there that can do some really cool stuff with sound in 3D, I'm just not finding anything useful to me. Is there something you could recommend, free, shareware, or demo? Thanks.

By the way, I'm on a PC with XP. No real special audio software, aside from Sound Forge 4. something. Also, very little in the way of audio experience. Thanks again.

I think you are talking about surround sound but maybe some call it 3D because it makes it sound even more "high techie." Sort of like all this High Definition sound I keep hearing about.

Plenty of audio programs will allow you to mix surround channels but most are pretty expensive. I hear/read Vegas has a surround feature that is quite popular. You might want to take a look at that.

The ultimate issue is of course to mix surround you need a proper studio set-up to do it well. There are a few websites on how to build a studio for cheap but you still have to buy the hardware. Also check out Tomlinson Homan's book on mixing surround.

Good luck

It is surround in the most basic sense, but I wanted to be able to control the "spatial location" a bit easier, and have more control over it. There is a program called 3D speaker test, or something like that. It allows you to literally take a sound, and move it around in space. That is sort of what I want to do.

Example- If someone were slightly twisted, and wanted to mess with people, he'd put the sound of a buzzing mosquito into the soundtrack so that it is barely audible, and move it around in space like it was buzzing around the viewers head.

vegas will allow you to move your sound to any speaker at any time many programs will do this. also just like wabbit said you will need the correct setup(5.1 surround) and all the hardware to make this work for you. Also here is what is surround panner looks like in vegas and check out the link below.

Yeah, that's the kind of thing I'm looking for. Thanks for the heads up on that Img. I am not a Vegas fan though, let's see if they have a plug in for PP2. What hardware do I need to look at?

If you don't like Vegas, ProTools also has surround sound, but that would most likely be more expensive. Any surround sound card with 5.1 output would work, the higher quality you go the more satisfied you'll be, but also the more you'll spend. (And if you use ProTools, you'd have to use one of their audio interfaces.)

I haven't tried Pro Tools, and quite frankly, a bit intimidated by it. And what I really want, is the simplicity that surround panner appears to offer. Not a complete idiot here, but I do have my moments. Wait... I mean... oh, never mind ;)

As far as audio output with 5.1, my MB has 5.1 built in. of course, it is stereo rear, stereo front, center, sub. Good enough to play with for now?

Just to add a little more information on this, the last time I looked, ProTools LE, which is the affordable version of ProTools, does not support surround mixing, even with the $999 DV Toolkit option. The full-blown ProTools systems are very expensive. Also, if you want do surround mixing, as opposed to playback/decoding, a surround playback card is not going to help you. You would need an audio interface that has 6 or more outputs to use with surround-capable audio software. There are a lot of cards that are designed to allow playback of surround from DVDs and the like, but this is a different animal than what you would need for surround mixing. I hope this helps.
