I want to build a very low cost 3d camera rig to experiment and learn. Does anybody know any good resources?
I want to have the ability to have a very small interaxial distance, but I can't afford to build a beam splitter rig. My best idea so far was to use pocket cams with a very narrow profile like this --> http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-Camileo-Full-HD-Pocket-Camcorder/dp/B003DZ122O and use them in a side by side config.
What do you think about it? Did anybody try something like that before? Also, are there any cams of this type with 24p? I couldn't find any...

i have done that with 2 Sanyo FH1 , the cheapest full HD camera i can find.
You can find cheaper little cams from Aiptek (starting around $180) , but none are providing reasonable quality like the FH1. I mean if your intend is to make real movie, the FH1 could be fine, but if it is just a proof of concept at minimal cost, a cheap Aiptek could be ok.

it is able to shoot at 1080p60, and are small enough to have 50 to 70 mm spacing.
if you use one remote to control both camera, you get a pretty nice synchronised start (1-2 frames, and somewhat less good stop, 6-12 frames , i tink the camera attempts to close GOP).
This camera is really crap for low light interior shots, but give really astounding pictures on well lit scenes.
I was even able to use zoom with the remote control.
HD is really mandatory for 3D. I you decide not to go HD, i got a NuView adapter that is the best and easiest way to shot 3D with a DV camera (0nly one required.)
