I am looking to do some 3D compositing and such for a short I am doing that will require a realistic-as-possible tornado, background replacement for a horizon consisting of a sunset being overcome by an oncoming lightning storm, cherry blossums in the wind, a flock of blackbirds, a house exploding (realistic not movie-fake), and a face to face encounter with a vicious wolf. I am new to all this, and I have Maya 8, 3dsMax 8, After Effects 6.5, Vegas 6, Premiere Pro 2.0, Vue 5 Infinite, Photoshop CS2, and Illustrator. I know the editing apps up and down, but its the maya, 3dsmax, AE, Vue 5 that I need to understand. I am from Green Bay and can't find anyone who knows this stuff. I have some books but they don't show how to do these types of things. Need help. Books? Seminars? CDs? Brain implants?

A stocking was used for the tornado in the Wizard of OZ.
Cg-ers could do something reasonably well with particles.

maybe ask over in the Photoshop forum for someone to do a matte painting of this. Some of those guys can take a stock photo and do brilliant things with it.
***cherry blossums in the wind, a flock of blackbirds:
character animation. Buy, sub out or do one bird model and do a 3ds crowd animation (or what Maya has).
***a house exploding (realistic not movie-fake):
whew, not CG, not in this short time with this (assuming) bugdet.
Maybe a real miniature model. To help with real looks try CGing real house footage onto it/ or print off some pictures of real house and cut & glue onto the real model.
Set up the cam in proper persective and (make a little explosive) & blow that sucker UP.
***a face to face encounter with a vicious wolf:
1/ Check your local humane society's for a dog that looks like a wolf.
Offer a BIG donation.
2/ Find a real wolf in a zoo?...okay that's no good.
3/ Find someone who handles wolves (sanctuaries?)and ask if you can go out and film one, or buy stock footage or ask them to film..ect.
4/ CG? Again, the talent required to pull it off means big money is going to be involved. I wouldn't bother. But then again I've seen an awsome scary cg pig-bore so who knows.
whew. You may need to hire someone JUST to coordinate all of this.

Its always funny when people ask for VFX shots to be done in CG, they see stuff in Films from Hollywood and think yea thats cool, I want that. Of course they forget how much EACH shot costs in terms of man hours/ money/ harware /software (some of which is in house custom jobs).
We are talking big figures not something you could cook up in your bedroom on your home PC, as much as desktop techology has come along.
VFX shots is extremly demanding from all corners of profession from, the guys who shoot to the people who do comps to the 3d artists. All this needs to work seamlessly. If its one guy s/he needs to master all three areas, not such as easy task.
I'm not saying its impossible, buts its a bit of a stretch.

Thanks for the input. I am aware of the task at hand, and already put a budget together based on the average rate I came up with. I actually donated $100 to a sanctuary here in GB to ensure that the very reason I am doing the wolf shot was to support the beauty and importance of the wolves, and they let me come in and film them eating and walking around. Maybe I could add some effects to the actual footage? Anyhow, my script is going to be looked at by Marketing VPs for Paramount, Mandalay Bay, and Dreamworks, possibly the Weinstein company. I want to show them a short version of the film, but I will at least need the tornado, the lightning storm, and the wolf. Anyone within driving distance of Green Bay that could help me? What are your rates? Thanks again.
