3D Glasses effect

Hi guys,

I'm wondering if any of you have any experience with the 3D Glasses effect in AE CS5.5.

I'm playing around with it but it doesn't look very good. I would think that good 3D footage is more complicated than splitting a 2D footage into red and blue/green. There is very very limited info on google about it. So if anyone has any experience, please share.

Thanks

No doubt about it, the 'fake' 3-D by spatially shifting RGB, and then viewing with R/B glasses... is cheap, and probably not what is done for 'real(tm)' productions... I would imagine there's a hell of a lot of rotoscoping of scene elements to give the 3-D look, along with presentation in polarized form...

The other thing that the Wife and I have tried, at least for stills, years ago was making 'winkies' with lenticular lens material. Basically cut two (or more) images in to 'small' strips, lay the lenticular lens material on, and eh wala... a winkie...

I think there's a Doc Brown of Adobe tutorial on this on his site... http://www.russellbrown.com/tips_tech.html

Don't know if he's done a 3-D Photoshop tutorial or the like... or a 'moving pictures' one for AE...

Check out the 3D View parameter. You've got Stereo Pair, Over Under, Interlaced Upper L and Lower R, Difference and more. Balance Colored Red Blue is only the default. This effect has been improved in After Effects CS5.5, the effect works in 8-bpc, 16-bpc, or 32-bpc color. Units, alignment control and new modes have been added.

Rich Young collects resources for stereoscopic 3D on the After Effects Portal website (now on ProVideo Coalition):
