hi, if i have a 3d max animation ( very basic , 3 square on ground and a camera spinning around ) it is possible to export that camera movement ( and composition) into an after effect 3d comp to stick text or a growing image on the squares? ...i was looking and i found whit MAX2AE but theres is no place or tutorial where i can see how it works , if any would helps thanks!.

I'm sure you can export camera data somehow, but why would you want to? I don't understand why you wouldn't just use the graphics/images you want as moving textures directly inside of Max.

here's a quick example of what I think you are wanting, but without the headache of camera data and compositing. Simple video files as textures.

much of that may be After Effects outright, without much in the way of 3D. But some of them, it is definate texturing on 3D objects, which are then moved about.

I think you could probably pull almost all of that off in AE, and if you notice, during the parts where sections move, there is considerable motion blur, something that definatley aids in faking true 3D from 2D, where the elements are only 2D and sometimes 2D in 3D space as to create top sections and such.

Much of it looks 3D though, and your best bet would be to texture a 3D object which has been sectioned and then animated.

Of course, there are plugins in AE that can give a true 3D depth, but you would have to go that route.

Remember also, speed is your friend in animations like this. The flipping around of the signs takes place so quickly, the eye is fooled into seeing depth where there may not be any. If you are not comfortable with texturing and animating in Max, I would try to do all of it in AE. You would be surprised how much you can pull off.

kai, our resident mograph expert can prolly lend some info on how to do that kind of thing, as could oneinfiniteloop, who uses C4D and AE together quite a bit.

If you're talking about the Move project, here's a link to Alan Shisko's blog who breaks down he did the project. There's a link to a 28 min long video at the end of the post.

In C4D this would be pretty simple...place your nulls and export the camera into a AEC comp.

I just referenced Chris & Trish Meyers Creating Motion Graphics with AE, vol 2, which is a great book any serious AE folk need o pick up. I'll recap here the best I can without writing out the whole chapter.

When you render your animation from 3ds you need to render it as a RPF which is in the Render Output File dialog under Save as Type. You'll also need to know your cameras field of view and the position on the object you want to add the image to in AE...so write 'em down.

Next, import your RPF sequence into AE, conform the frame rate in the Interpret Footage dialog box, then drag it down to the create new comp button. Once it's open, right click the footage in timeline of the comp then go to Keyframe Assistant->RPF Camera Import. That will create a camera layer called RPF Camera.

Bring your image or text or whatever into the comp, turn the 3d layer switch on, and take the position you wrote down of your 3d object and input that as the 2d layer's position. Next open up the camera settings, make sure the measure film size is set to horizontally, then set the Angle of View to the field of view you wrote down from your 3d camera.

That should do it...obviously I've never done it before, but it came from a good source. You have to have AE Pro to do this for the Keyframe Assistant.

Also, like Matt said you can fake it in 2.5d in AE, but that depends on your intended final result. I'm off to set up net renders for 18 scenes with multipass...lol

I found exporting a RPF file whit camera data and importing from Ae, thats works, but the weird thing is when i place an 3d solid on the comp space, its not the same movement then the camera will give in the 3d space, i dont know if you understand it ( i guess mi inglish Lol) thanks.

"EW&!!!!! RPF its useful ! hehehe , i do all steps, but when i click on a solid to convert in 3d space , the camera movement go to left , and the solid go to right...when the camera go to front th solid go to front too...simply dont match, i think the RPF its usefull to match 3d camera.
