3D Anyone?

Noticed that there has been a lot more buzz out of first Hollywood, and now even demos and panels on 3D at NAB. All of them saying it's for real, and the next big thing.

Hmmm, why am I not interested much at all?

I heard some stuff a while back about high end projectors projecting at extremely fast fps counts and in 3D. I believe james cameron is involved with the development of it.

What I read was that the images look like you are looking "into" the picture and that it is a completely different and mind blowing experience.

Sounded extremely interesting to me.

You're probably thinking of the system we used on Avatar.

3D processes have never worked for me - massive double-images and headaches - until Avatar. Even the low-res working comps are fun to watch. Plus the new technology offers a *lot* more flexibility than the older systems.

It's true; the screen starts to feel more like a big hole in the wall, and you're looking through it at the action beyond. We saw a test sequence lifted from King Kong and re-rendered at full resolution, and it was amazing. You could just about smell the T-Rex's breath...

The goal is 12/09...or at least, it *was*.

I don't know if that release date is going to turn out to be doable, or not.

Greater minds than mine...

I still question as to how much staying power 3D will have? It still seems like more of a fad or gimmick to me. It may look fantastic, but back in 1960 some of the 3D films then looked fantastic to people. No one had seen anything like it. But 3D faded away then.

I suppose one could say the same about color, or sound, or etc. though.

And, I believe Avatar will be a huge success. But I also believe it would have been a huge success in 2D.

My short film, orginally shot on regular 35mm film a few years ago, was recently selected and purchased by a company to go through this conversion process to 3d. I can't wait to see the finished project.
