35mm vs. Red

And yet his friend Rodriguez has been going on about how "film is dead" for years.

Absolutely - I love digital myself. And after seeing the trailer for BENJAMIN BUTTON, you'd have to ask yourself how long film has left?

There is a hillary version of this on you tube, before she lost. I think that came first, but still very funny.

Ugh, of course we can't have some fun without debating this dead topic.

Question is, how many of you all have ever shot film? Most people who rant about digital shoot digital only and have only ever touched film in a still camera. I am a film and digital guy. Most of the work I shoot is film. Why? Because it is cheaper for what I need it for. What? Cheaper? How can this be? We have all been force-fed, digital is the king, red killed film. Who will ever shoot film when we have the HVX200. It's my baby.

There are many many people here who will say that. But is there a reason hollywood doesn't shoot with HVX's if they are so superior to film? Well, indie film makers can and will shoot digital. Hollywood, not so much.

What would Hollywood rent? An F900 is most common for smaller sets, with a rental of 1000 a day, camera only and some other goodies. What would most of you all use? Probably an HVX at 400 dollars a day. The HPX3000 is even more than the F900. There is a reason the big guys use big cameras in regards to digital cinema. The F900 some of you might touch, and it is the baby of digital cinema...yet it produced some huge blockbusters, Star Wars is the most cited. The F23, the F35, the Phantom, The Viper, the Genesis...not many of you will even have the pleasure of seeing in operation, and are the forerunners of digital cinema.

It's true, film is more expensive. It's cheaper for me because I have access to an Aaton LTR, and an XTRprod. Both 16mm. If you are economical with 16mm and shoot for what you need. And also try to limit yourself to a 1:2 ratio on takes. You are generally in good shape. With the new vision 3 stock, you would be hard pressed to find the grain in there, but the latitude will surprise you.

Film is far from dead. Maybe it is dead in the independent world. But it is hardly dead. And I would be surprised if it ever died.

Button was shot on the Viper cam with Digiprimes. A single digprime lens at the minimum is 30k. Just to put things into perspective.
