Please be informed that it turns out I was being wound up by my friend?
I apologise for raising your hopes of finding a substitute for the ground glass.
I feel really bad about this, but I thought he was genuine.

Polyester membrane? thats interesting.

Please keep us posted.

Quote from the holyzoo movie: "You better get that to work on the XL1, mo fo!"

Polyester membrane...

Like a piece of diffusion material? If the grain structure is fine enough it should work just fine. Not really all that different than what is used in a rear projection TV.

I think I have found the Perfect replacement for the Ground Glass.
I told a friend of mine, who is a biochemist about the problems everyone has. He said that he didnot know why it was such a problem!!!
He has said that he will show me how to produce a Polyester Membrane that has no "Grain" and can be stationary!!!!
I said he was winding me up, but he says he will prove it. If this works out, I shall be marketing it!!!!
Stay tuned!!!

dooooooood, if that is true, you'd have a gold mine on your hands.

what would be considered "fine enough"

I found this interesting piece of info.

I am involved in manufacturing so I will contact a materials specialist and determine what commercially available materials exist. I already have an idea or two as to where this is currently used so I don't think that it will be difficult to source. As for the question what is "fine enough" that would depend upon the size of the projected image. If you want to obtain 500 line resolution, then divide the image size by 500 to estimate the size of the structure needed.

It may not be. The properties of a focus screen are analogous to a rear projection screen and they do use a similar material. I suspect that someone may be interested in commercializing this and are becoming concerned that many will discover that it is neither proprietary nor obscure materials properties. As soon as I have a bit of time, I'll do some basic research and see if there are any underlying issues with this approach.
