35MM adaptor vs Adpatimax

It seems as if you can get your 35mm depth of field for a fraction of the price and hassle.
No, you won't get anything of the sort. The Adaptimax does not provide 35mm DOF. It allows you to mount Nikon lenses on your camera, but it is not a DOF adapter.

So you have, what, a V1E now? V1E has a range of, what, it's probably about 5mm to 100mm, right? So zoom your V1E to 50mm, and that's what a 50mm Nikon lens would look like mounted straight to the camera. Zoom it to 20mm, and that's what a 20mm Nikon would look like.

Is there something i'm totally missing here? the adaptimax doesn't flip, lose light, is a fraction of the price and way less hassle than a standard 35mm lens adaptor.
Yes, there's something you're missing -- the Adaptimax doesn't flip, or lose light, and it's a fraction of the price of a 35mm DOF adapter, because it *isn't* a 35mm DOF adapter... it's just a mechanical coupling that lets you physically mount a Nikon lens to your video camera. But it doesn't do anything to change the depth of field.

Yes, just because you can put a 35mm lens on the camera doesn't mean you'll get the same DOF. The small sensor of the camera would result in a magnification factor of about 7 fold and the result is an extreme telephoto effect. A 35mm adapter users a huge ground glass to stimulate the camera sensor so that you get the full FOV of the lens.

Let me explain what the Adaptimax does. Barry is right. It isn't a 35mm adaptor. That is completely different.

An Adaptimax allows Nikon or Canon EF lenses to fit directly onto the Sony PMW-EX3, HVR-Z7 and a host of other cameras. It will not work on cameras with fixed lenses like the Sony PMW-EX1.

The advantage of the Adaptimax is in telephoto and Macro. If you want to use it for shooting heads talking, it is not the right tool for the job.

It comes into its own if you are trying to film something at a distance, like wildlife, surfing, surveillance work etc. There is a X5.4 magnification factor.

A 200mm Nikon or Canon will turn into a 1080mm telephoto, whilst a 600mm Nikon or Canon will become a 3240mm super telephoto! Go find out what a Fujinon would cost that would do the same!

A 50mm lens on a 35mm adaptor would still be 50mm. The same lens on an adaptimax would give 270mm. A 35mm adaptor and an Adaptimax would compliment each other.

Interestingly I was out shooting today with the Adaptimax and the 80-200mm Nikon lens was sharper than the stock PMW-EX3 lens. And of course with no glass, you get perfect edge to edge sharpness.

Why not come and have a play with an Adaptimax? For those in the UK and Europe, we are exhibiting at Broadcast Video Expo at Earls Court in London next week. You are all welcome to come along to our stand and have a play with an Adaptimax on an EX3 and Z7. We have a large selection of lenses available to test out the adaptors.

oh man... i wanna go to the Utah salt flats and shoot a scene with the 600mm lens, for standard coverage... like back up 3 miles, and shoot.... hehehe

Using a 600mm lens does give a very shallow depth of field on F4!! I was out usng the Adaptimax yesterday and am heading out of the door again i ten minutes to shoot some more. Hopefully the wind is lower than yesterday as I have a 1000mm Sigma to play with! Light winds required!

It's a Satchler Video 20 11 on a Satchler base. Forgot what the name Satchtler gave it, but basically the middle section pole rises up to whatever height you want. Its not lightweight though! Will last me a lifetime, or until it's done my back in!

What was the question? The original poster has helpfully deleted their first post!

Hi Peter,
the original question was along the lines of why should I buy a 35mm adaptor when I can buy an Adaptimax? No truer word said!

Seriously the original poster wanted to know the difference between a 35mm adaptor and an Adaptimax. It has been explained that both are very useful tools to own.

See you next week at BVE!
