35mm Adapter project + Canon EF lens question.

Hey Guys,

For my final year project at university this coming september I am going to create a range 35mm adapters. I intend to create as many as possible static, vibrating and spinning. With different combinations of GG, lenses etc. I will be mainly working on DVX or HVX and possibly a Sony z7. I'm guessing the DVX and Sony mainly as they have the same thread size.

So hopefully by the end of it I shall be able to answer questions rather than be asking them :p. I will of course upload the dissertation if there is any intrest.

Anyway on to my question.

I have seen alot of adapters using the Canon EF lenses however as far as I can see without getting my hands on one they appear to have no manual exposure on the lens. So how do people set the exposure?

Basicly i'm looking to start buying lenses and looking into them. The main competitors are the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 and the Nikkor 50mm AIS f/1.8.
Also wouldnt mind the Canon FD but it means I would need to get the mount for it. Which seems to be harder to find than for the nikon or EF.

Remember i'm a student so don't have a massive amount of money for lenses ;)

Cheers in advance

You put the lens on a Canon DSLR body, set the iris electronically, then press and hold the DOF Preview button and remove the lens. The iris will stay lock and you can put the lens back on the adapter.

Then EF lens definitely isn't for you. They're expensive! You can buy older Nikon or FD lenses for much cheaper.

Thanks for the quick reply.

As I don't have a canon EOS it rather rules them out, with the cost a double no.

Looks like ill be going for Nikon lenses as it appears to be less hassle

I'll keep my eye out on eBay over the next couple of weeks for a lens. I'll keep this forum updated with the progress of my project. (If anyone cares ha ha)

Nikons are great glass, but in my experience FDs are cheaper and easier to find.

These are my lenses and what I paid for them. They all came from Ebay.

70 -200mm F4 - $10.00
135mm F2.8 - $38.00
50mm F1.8 - $22.49
28mm F2.8 - $23.75

Good Luck

I agreed with jason.adams. I've got the canon 50mm 1.4 and 200mm 3.3, decent glass.

I would say to keep your eyes on ebay and see if you can pick up a 50mm, 28mm and 135mm for under $100 total.

Cheers guys.

I have brought a Nikkor 50mm which was fairly cheap for Ebay uk. Which due to it been UK cost more than the states. :(

Set me back £38 so just under $80.
Going keep my eye out for some more lenses.

It arrived this morning and I couldn't wait to make a start. So I made a super diy adapter with the packaging the lens came in and for a ground glass a plastic wallet like you use in folders. :p

As you can imagine the quality is pretty terrible.

Here are some pics, I'll upload some footage in an hour or so. Once I can get an NLE to work on this new pc haha.

Says alot for the quality of the new letus then.

I like the Z7, we hired one once. Didnt really want to send it back...

Yeah patent pending on the masking tape supports, who needs rods :p

And

I agree the z7 is really good, been using it for the past 3 months and would urge everyone to give them a try.
The CF flash recording is also a great help for me atm.
