35mm Adapter Necessary?

I need to shoot some extremely long telephoto shots with my HVX200. I have a Century 1.6x adapter and it is not long enough. Is my next step to get a 35mm adapter and a long still camera lens? Does anyone have recommendations for this use? I am not overly concerned with the super shallow DOF that seems to be most peoples' reason for wanting a 35mm adapter. I just need a very very long lens.

Thanks

Long tele usu looses light, all 35mm adapters give up picture quality after F5.6, so consider also paying for the most primo telephoto glass you can. I think at Z99 its like a 200mm+ 35mm lens - So you're looking at 400mm+ - those at low F-stops are hard to find.

What are you doing with it, going out to film Area 51? or Sports Events or something?

DJDecay,

not exactly sure what you mean in your post. Are you saying that at full zoom the HVX is the equivalent of a 200mm lens on a 35mm camera?

Yes I understand the need for good glass in front of anything.

What I am really wondering is do I need a 35mm adapter to get some extra telephoto capabilities?

Yes I am filming Area 51. There is going to be a major event there on the next full moon. You should come out and look:)

Thanks

If you have the longest adapter you can find for your existing lens, a 35 adapter might be your next stop to get a longer lens. Sure, you'll have a hard time finding a fast 400mm lens, but if that's what you need...that's what you need.

No. 35mm adapter will get you more FOV, not less. The HVX at full telephoto is the equivalent of a 425 mm lense in 35mm equivalent! Chip size is so small that the FOV on the stock lense is severely cropped.

Take the focal length on the HVX (55 mm at the telephoto end) and multiply it by the crop factor (around 7.8 for 1/3'' chip) and you end up with the equivalent focal length of 425 mm. Adapters are the wrong way to go if you want more telephoto unless you can shell out big bucks for the massive pro tele lenses.

Yeah, you're looking at a lot of money for this kind of thing. No way you could get closer? Could you screw another century adapter onto the one you currently have, effectively doubling the length (I'm not sure how they work)?

Hmm, kind of conflicting information here. Can anyone confirm what Huy Vu says about our stock lens being the equivalent of a 425mm lens? The still cam lens I have access to is this one:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/520639-USA/Nikon_2171_AF_S_Nikkor_400mm_f_2_8G.html

It is a Nikkor 400mm f2.8. Yes this is a very expensive lens, but I have friends who are still photographers with very nice kits. But if I understand correctly, my stock HVX lens is effectively longer than this lens used in conjunction with a 35mm adapter? This seems unlikely to me. Not trying to doubt you Huy Vu, but I want to make sure about this.

Thanks,
Craig

Thanks Huy Vu,

You just saved me a couple grand. I dug up information that a 1/3 inch sensor has a crop factor of about 7.2 which would give our 55mm focal length a 35mm equivalent of 396mm. Slightly less than what you posted, but very close. Is there some more info you have that led you to the 7.8 number? Are our non-square pixels a factor here? Just trying to get educated.

Aloha,
Craig
