35mm Adapter for HPX170

There is no reason you could not use any of the various adapters available on the market today.
At the most you would need a step down ring for any adapter made to mount on an 82mm lens.

But there is no reason you would need a specific 170 adapter.

Would there be any noticeable difference between using an 82mm adapter with an HVX200a and using it with an HPX170 and a step down ring?

The HPX170 is not out so we really don't know for sure.

The HPX170 has a new lens so it may need a different achromatic lens just like the Sony X1.

Look at the "HMC150 questions answered" thread for some example pics of using my 82mm Letus Ultimate with a 72-82 step-up ring on an HMC150 (same lens and chips as an HPX170). Short answer, it'll work right now.

Actually, this is a good point. I put the Ultimate right on the 150 and it looked pretty good, but I was also going for extremely shallow DOF so edge softness wouldn't have shown. It's possible that a new achromat may be necessary for extreme clarity edge to edge.

Our CFXL drop-in element was designed specifically to deliver edge sharpness on cameras like the EX1, but would also work with any lens showing this problem. Given our track record with Panasonic so far, I would predict zero issues for the Brevis system using either our CF1le, or CFXL imaging elements.

Barry, we'll have to send one down to you to play with :-)

Is there any advantage to the wider angle of view lens on the HPX170 for 35mm adapters?

Is there any advantage between the HMC150 or HPX170 when using with a 35mm adapter?

Also, is the native thread mount (I'm sure that's not the correct term) for an adapter 82mm or 72mm? Let's say for a Brevis?

The Brevis MP.1 has 72mm threads in either the flipped or non-flipped configuration (from day 1), but we stock step up or step down rings in CNC aluminum for just about every camera out there. All of our achromats are 72mm to ensure that cameras with larger/wider angle glass will never vignette on any of our components. It also maximizes edge to edge sharpness by ensuring the host camera is always well into the sweet spot of the optics.

It seems the general gist is that the EX1 fix achromats or GG units improve the results for panasonic cameras as well. Thus, I think an EX1 type of adapter would deliver good results for the similar HPX. I would consult with the HVXa owners as well to see if they have noticed anything significantly different. My guess is no.

Correct.

With camera's like the HVX200 and Canon XH-A1, our standard flip and CF1le is extremely good edge to edge. What CFXL does is improve performance of these cameras below f4 which in both cases is near to the factory lens sweet spot.

On the EX1, which so far is unique, there's a big difference edge to edge with our CFXL. We should our EX1 video shooting guide up later tonight..with charts.

Can't say for sure, but I can't really think of why there would be.

Same lens, same chips, should deliver optically identical performance.

I don't know how all adapter manufacturers do it, but I know Letus offers different native mounts, you order it for the camera/size that you want. I've used a 72mm Letus Extreme on an 82mm HVX using an 82mm->72mm step-down ring, and it works great. I've used an 82mm Letus Ultimate on a 72mm HMC150 using a 72mm->82mm step-up ring, and that worked well too.

Barry, correct me if am wrong, but the new 170 has a flip function... so no flip is needed. The flip, thought, improves the sharpness, by extending the length light travels from ground glass to the camera lens on same adapters... so the G35 could work with no flip... I'm thinking loudly...

The 170 offers an LCD flip. I still would prefer an optical flip because, if nothing else, it means the recording is recorded right-side-up.

Another naive question. Are the focus assist features of the HMC150 and HPX170 rendered moot when using a 35mm adapter?

The new features will only improve the use of adapters. Having the extra focusing features will make focusing with adapters that much easier and precise. They could also allow you to shoot without a monitor in many situations.
