35 adaptor stupid questions

i'm sure the answers are in the search but still...

Why are everybody using external LCD 's?

Is it possible to zoom with the fixed lens ?

What are the weights of the installations, M2, Bravis, Etc.

Is hand held possible ? How ?

thanks....

Most adapters flip the image so an external monitor with a flip function is used to have a display that is oriented properly.

While in theory possible, it would only be over a very short range and would result in revealing the characteristics of the focus screen and would also likely vignette. So perhaps a better answer would be possible, but don't do it.

It will vary from adapter to adapter, but consider that you will likely want a set of rails and a follow focus as well, with a typical lens, 1.5 to 2 pounds would be a reasonable estimate.

Again possible, but I would recommend using a good shoulder rig to support all the added mass, particularly since a good portion of it will be far forward of the front of the camera.

all i can say is my rig is heavy, in the 11 pound area if i had to guess, i never wiegh it. heres a pic of it.

also remember the rail system and rail mount can weigh a good deal depending on which you get.

I did tripod and handheld for my short Catherine ( Right click to download ) your arm can get very tired really quickly handheld, but its doable, you have to support underneath as well since you dont want all that weight on the handle when carrying it.

any tricks for shooting long days without a tripod ? which are the shoulder supports that work with such a front heavy setup ?

Most 35mm adaptor make the camera very heavy, actually, I should say very front heavy which is even worst... There are no good shoulder supports for hand held long day shooting. I have owned an M2, got a dvrig pro which is one of the best shoulder support available and it was still too heavy. I ended up getting a Steadicam Flyer.

Also focusing hand held with a 35mm adaptor is very difficult.

The M2 is probably one of the heaviest adaptor in the sub $1000 category. Here is something I read recently which might help you out in your decision...

You can read more in this 35mm shootout by Phil Bloom:

http://www.philipbloom.net/

The good thing with this shootout is it has a very "neutral tone" it doesn't tell you which is best, you decide.
Also Phil is a working pro as oppose to a film student (nothing wrong with film students except that they don't have a client behind their back)... A lot of his remarks are based on "in the field" situations..."
Phil owns both the M2 and The Brevis, and met up with the guy that build the SGpro for the shootout.

It's a good read.

cheers.

FOr a long day you will need a tripod, even if its just to put the dam thing down really quick , dont wanna put it on the cement or wherever you are shooting.

I have a question and rather than starting another 35mm adapter thread, I'll highjack this one ;) But seriously it goes along with what was said - I'm really leanning toward the Brevis and I have some Nikon 28mm and 50mm lenses already. With that kind of setup, I really don't feel as if I need the rail support system, but CERTAINLY don't want to damage the camera. So is anyone actually 'running and gunning' with the brevis and a 28-50mm lens - I don't have any huge zoom I want to attach to it. Thanks,

Mark.

I think that the Brevis is so light that you probably don't need extra support for 28 or 50 mm lens. But a rail support system makes the whole thing a bit more secure.

If you care about the camera then id recommend a rail system for using any 35mm adapter. If its just a beat em up older DVX or something, then you can probably get away with it for a while.

I run and gun with mine (HVX+Brevis+Prime) all the time. No problem at all.

I don't bother with rails unless I need a follow focus or mattebox.

Could you send a picture of the hole thing? Thanks in advance
