3100w Generator to power up a 2.5k HMI

What input voltage does the ballast take? It would need to be power factor corrected to have any chance, however I doubt you'd get enough amps from that gennie to fire up a 2.5k anyway.

The only small generators anyone ever uses in production are Honda inverter generators. Yamaha makes nice ones too, but it sure seems to me that Honda are the most reliable since they're what everyone predicates at least part of their set power on, and even those have their issues now and then. For a 2.5k, I would definitely not go with that one. All HMI's draw anywhere from slightly more to significantly more power than their advertised wattage, depending on the ballast. With any 2.5k, you'd be running it at or over the constant power rating, something I would not do on a $900 generator from a manufacturer I've never heard of.

You really should only run a generator at 80% full load and you're going to be just barely over that with a 2.5 if it's power factor corrected. If it's not, there's no chance it'll run reliably. You'll probably need a 6500 to be able to handle the 2.5.

I wouldn't even recommend running it for long periods of time at 80% of full load. It'll work, but it's not going to like that...
