30p timeline issue

I'm editing footage I shot in 30p. I'd shot everything as such so I can slow down anything I want in a 24 timeline, but just doing a rough in 30 right now, and there are a bunch of problems. When I set in/out points, they don't apply to the proper frames, and i often have to razor clips to get them right. The audio doesn't match up, especially if I change the speed of the clip. There may be other issues but these are the two that have been killing me.

Has anyone else experienced this? Could it be the way I captured (30 instead of 29.97)? I'm at a real loss here.

What video format? NTSC-DV is not literally 30 but actually 29.97. What sample rate was the audio recorded at? What were your capture settings? Need more info.

It's DV, audio recorded at 48k. I captured at 30fps... I took the standard 24pa capture setting and changed fps to 30, took pulldown removal off.

What version of FCP?
How are you setting in and out points?
FPS for a DVX100 shooting in 24pA mode should be 29.93fps.
There's a sticky in the DVX or HVX section about this.

I was shooting in 30p I just used the 24pA setting as a starting point because there is no 30p capture I saw. I've been setting ins and outs various ways, using key shortcuts, the buttons in fcp, and also dragging the edges of clips to make it longer and shorter.

I realized last night I may have captured DF instead of NDF, would that cause an issue?

Also, when changing/reversing speed, it picks a frame at random, usually from outside the span of the clip, and uses that as a still for the length of the clip.

Just recaptured at 29.97 progressive using NDF. Now it also appears to be lower res. What settings should I be using to capture 30p?

Drop Frame, Non-Drop Frame, it's just a method of counting and has nothing at all to do with resolution.

I'm aware of that... mostly just keeping track of what actually worked to capture and what didn't. I've been searching all over but have not seen anything that gives a better indication of how to capture other than my method of taking normal 29.97 and changing it to progressive. Is there something I am missing?

Capture your footage using the dv/ntsc easy setup or dvcpro/ntsc 48K. Make sure your sequence is the same. Don't touch anything else until you know what it does. Good Luck.

Sheeley,
You don't seem to be getting the answers you want. Same here. I love this forum, read it all the time, but I never can find the answer to this question.

How do you successfully capture and edit 30p DVX footage in FCP(version 5.0.4)?

when I use the 23.98 advanced pulldown settings, I lose frames and get a choppy image (which is logical). When I use the DV-NTSC easy setup, I get an interlaced image that looks crappy.

Disco Robo mentioned to use dv/ntsc easy set up, make sure the sequence is the same, and not touch anything else.
Is that THE WAY to capture and edit 30p footage from a DVX in FCP (version 5.0.4)?

An definite answer would be most appreciated.

Progressie footage is in fact much more choppy than interlaced. You have to compensate for it when planning shots.

you're judging your 'choppy/interlaced' footage on your LCD (just a guess...). you need to see how it looks on an NTSC monitor or a regular television. your first mistake was messing with the capture settings. 30p should be captured and edited in FCP just like 60i (standard DV 29.97 fps).

capture using 29.97 easy setup.
create a 29.97 sequence.
in the sequence settings, set field order to "none."
that's how you do it.
