30P playback

When you all shoot 30P, is the playback already in slo motion? Or do you have to do something in post. I always slow my video whether its 24p or 60i in post but if 30p has instant slow mo playback results I may use that next time.

30P plays back in real time, just like 24p does and just like 60i does. It gets shot at 30 frames per second and plays back at 30 frames per second.

If you want to use 30p as slow-mo within your 24p project, you'll have to slow it down yourself. As far as I can tell, I think there's a way in FCP to do it through Cinema Tools or something, where you just re-flag the timebase. But I've never used FCP and freely admit I have no idea what I'm talking about...

Okay, I always here people on here saying for slo mo shots they elect to shoot in 30p. I am just wondering why if you can slow down the video as slow as you want in post and it will still be smooth.

you actually want to use 60i for slow motion stuff.

with 60 fields of information there's more info to use to interpolate the extra fields.

Progressive is harder and 24fps is even harder still.

Good luck,

Because you can't slow footage down in post as slow as you want, it'll be horrible, not smooth.

30p is perfect for using in a 24p project because you can make it frame-for-frame accurate. Play the 30 frames back at a 24-frame rate and it'll give you perfect 20% slow-mo with no interpolation, no weirdness, no nonsense -- just genuine, true film-style slow-motion.
