Well I have been DP for a long time. And from time to time I use some far out there light, like a beer can light or christmas lights. But as far as a light kit goes. Spend some money. Get a gook four peace Arri Kit. Yes you are paying for the name, but with that name comes the qulity you want from a light. Light is all about color temp, and to use photo lights, witch are just 120 watt light bulds, Your camera will not like them. You will not get the look you want. Buy real light for your main kit, and then buy cheep lights latter down the road.

thanks imgenter
thanks for the info
..as much as i would like to buy those ones, simply cant afford that right now...
wish i coould

I have to agree with this. I'm in the process of getting rid of my open faced lights. After using the fresnel kits at work... open face simply does not cut it any more. And I doubt you're paying for the name. Peppers aren't really any cheaper. Nor are the Altmans or Moles.

I learned this lesson the hard way-- you'll grow out of open faced lights VERY quickly, and you'll kick yourself for having spent the money.

Hi. Intresting topic guys.

I have been also thinking of getting some Arris fresnels...my question would be what kind of stand would be good for those Arris? How do you actually connect them to the stand? :undecided

And what Arris would you get? 150W, 300W or 650W? Can I manage with 150w and 300W or do I need to get 300W and 650W?

Hi there it depends really on your work whether to have 150 wif 300 or the 650 wif 300! if ur doing entertaintment or news where by everything is in control situation u might wana get the arri 150 and 300 jr ! if ur doing indie films or drama 650 and 300w will suffice!

huh?

I still think this is the wrong approach. Open face, no barn barn doors-- they're going to be very cumbersome to use.

But hey, whatever floats your boat.

Although I totally agree, I doubt it's even close to realistic for him. He's asking our advice on a $200 light kit! I don't think he'll have the $2300 for the arri kit.

I don't have alot of money and what I did (And am still doing) is purchasing single lights off of ebay. So far I've got a 650 and a 300 and am getting another 650 this week (all of them are ARRIs). Once I've done that I'll get a 1k and That should be good for a bit. Also keep in mind that you'll need to spend some money on diffussion, gels, etc.

Your right i dont have the budget for a 2300 Kit, Would be nice but no, IM looking to shoot a short com March...so i need a Kit, want to purchase cause i plan to shoot lots, and i own a production comapny...

how is that working out? buying of ebay one at a TIME?

I'd stay away from that ebay light if I were you since it's basically just a 300 watt Home Depot worklight with barn doors on it.

When I started my kit I got 2 600 watt Britek focusing spots from www.rostronics.com with softboxes. If you are going to be using open faced lights you will need to soften the light in most cases.

When I got more money I got 2 650 watt Altman fresnels from b&w (www.bhphotovideo.com) Love the Altman's they are basically just like the Arris except about 40 bucks cheaper per head.

My advice to you is if you can dig up $300 - $400 go to www.rostronics.com and try getting a few of their lights with softboxes. You might also want to check out http://www.amvona.com/ I've never used their products but many others on this board have and liked them. espically their c-stands and light stands.

Before you do anything I'd say read these:

http://www.scottspears.net/filmmakpg3.html
Espically the article on low budget lighting

http://www.bluesky-web.com/new-page6.html
Espically the one about home made florescents

http://live-theater.org/slightlypoormanslightkit.htm

If you really can't go over $200 I'd recomend not spending it all on those 3 Smith Vector lights that take regular screw in bulbs. If that's your full limit I'd say go to Home Depot, World Market, even Wal-Mart and get some worklights, cliplights, Chinesse lanterns, small florescents and have a wider variety of things you can do and types of lights for probably less than $200.

Arri's will work on any stanard stands. Now if you buy a kit from them they come with stands that are very good. We use matthews C-Stands. We use them for alot more then just lights. And with the use of GOBO arms and other girp equipment when can put a light anywhere.

All I have to say is this remeber you get what you pay for. And if you want a client to pay for what they get, it might be the difference in a job with a budget and one with none.
