3-monitor editing suite setup

Hi all --

Can someone educate me how to set up a 3-monitor editing suite that is suited for color grading in FCP and After Effects?

I have a Mac Pro (8 core, latest model) with an ATI Radeon card that has two mini-display ports. Two computer screens are hooked up to the graphics card. How do I connect a 3rd screen suited for color correcting? I thought about getting a Samson LED tv for color correcting. From what I read, I need to get a Matrox or AJA I/O device to connect the tv, correct? but where does the Matrox/AJA get it's signal from if all ports of the graphic cards are being used??

Thanks!

Thanks for your replies.

The Blackmagic needs an input from my graphics card, correct? How can I use a plasma/LCD/LED tv in combination with my two computer monitors so I have 3-monitor setup?

Thanks for starting this thread. I'm doing a lot of one-man-band type editing projects and really need to step up my game. Back in the day (ha, like 4 years ago) i was using a small JVC standard def monitor for reference. Now I need to go HD. Something that myself and clients can look at.

Would this Blackmagic HDLink be a good bridge for an HD reference monitor? I would probably be using a standard plasma or LCD set as a monitor.

For my computer, I'm using a basic quad core intel tower….what connection would have to come out of it to run to the Black Magic box? Any help appreciated.

Matrox has solutions to drive external monitors and TVs. There are a whole range of options that in the case of the MXO2 include aquisition and hardware acceleration. Black Magic has similar products.

None of which is a substitute for using a true professional production monitor. AJA Kona LHinwith a FSI 17" monitor, do it right, see the true image. No computer monitor or HDTV can replace a production monitor. It'll get you closer to it, but not really there.
