3-chip camera question

i have a highly (i think) technical question about 3-chip cameras...
are the sensors (ccd or cmos) monochrome (or only sensitive to their respective color range)? or are they full color chips that simply have red, green, and blue filters on them?
thanks

thanks, but it didn't really tell me how the colors are separated (through filtering, or specialized chips)... it seems like a chip that only detected the wavelengths of the desired color would work best, but i have a feeling that the chips are full-color and just have a filter blocking opposing colors...

i've got e-mails into tech folks at a few camera companies to see if they can elaborate further

Monochrome sensors. There's a prism that splits the incoming light and routes green to one chip, blue to another, and red to the third.

they are? nice... that explains a lot. do you know if they are specially tuned for sensitivity to the colors? or identical sensors just gathering what (colored) light makes it through the prism?
thanks
