2D to 3D

Is there is a relatively easy way to convert 2D into immersive 3D? Obviously this should be done on set rather than in post but what does the process look like? Does it take a lot of manual rotoscoping or is it more automated? Will it look half decent?

Thank you!

There's a lot of roto, some of which can be sort of automated with tracking.

You'll divide each shot into seven or so different depth planes, rotoing the elements for each plane. Then you create cleanplates for each plane. IE, say your actor is on the closest plane, you'll need to remove the actor from any planes behind them. Next you create basic 3D geometry of the scene and project the original planes onto the geo via camera mapping. Now that you have the shot in 3D, you set up a virtual stereo camera (left and right) and render them out. This entire process will be repeated for each shot. I've been tempted to do a one minute short to experiment with it, but so far haven't really felt like putting in the time involved.

if cost from 100k to 1 million $ / minutes is not automatic or simple to do. If you want a casual movement on Z axis of elements of your pictures there are a lots of bad software to do that.
a good conversion 2d to 3d start from shooting, to shoot perspective, lines and plane to offer a good spacial emotion, then later in post there are a lot's of work but... i ever seen a half decent work also on high budget film against real 3d shooting.
