29.97 to 23.98 timeline

Hi guys,
Maybe one of you wizards can answer this for me. I captured my 24PA footage at 29.97 and did my edit in a 29.97 timeline. I'm not happy with the video look of the timing that I see on the NTSC monitor. I think if I had captured the footage at 23.98 I'd be happier with the results.

Is it possible to drop my 29.97 timeline cut into a 23.98 timeline? If so, will it make a difference in the movement? My understanding is 29.97 is a direct frame corelation to 23.98. Would FCP do the pulldown on the fly that way?

Thanks

Hmmm... Don't know. You might be able to do it with media manager and recapturing with pulldown removal. I'd add a few seconds of handles just to be sure.

Sorry -- I don't do much pulldown removal. No need for where I go with the final.

Try a reverse telecine in Cinematools, or conform in Cinematools.

You'd need to make a .mov file of your existing show to make the conversion.

If you are going to try and just drop your 29.97 into a 23.98 timeline beware of rendering, so I'd try a test of say 1 minutes worth of footage. Make sure it's footage with lots of cuts and scene changes, that way if there may end up being a problem you'd notice it from scene to scenem, cut to cut.

I've reversed 29.97 into 23.98 before with this cam, only it seemed stuttery to me, no flow, kinda glitchy, but test away, you may come up with good stuff.

I've never used cinematools before. Is there a work-flow somewhere on the web to do what you're talking about?

Re: 29.97 to 23.98 timeline

I think I'd try to recapture in 24 before going with cinematools. My way 'should' work, because the pulldown happens before the image goes to tape so the timecode should be the same...

Open the sequence and select Modify - Make Clips Independent

Select Media Manager and then Create Offline from the pulldown.

Set sequence preset to DV 48 23.98

Save the new project and batch capture the clips. Make sure you change your capture presets to DV 48 advanced pulldown removal 2.3.3.2

Give it a shot... though you might want to try a few smaller clips first. Set up a new sequence and copy about a minute of clips into it and try that first.

Good luck,

Re: 29.97 to 23.98 timeline

GUYS... You're all making it WAY too complicated. There is a simple solution here:

Storyteller32 said he captured 24P"Advanced" footage at 29.97. That's perfect.

All he needs to do within FCP4 is highlight all of his clips in the bin, and then go to the "Tools" menu and select "Remove Advanced Pulldown."

This will only take a few seconds... no Cinema Tools required for advanced pulldown.

Now select all of the reconnected clips in your 29.97 timeline and copy "CMD+C" and paste "CMD+V" into a 23.98 sequence.

DASHWOOD YOU ROCK! That's exactly what I was looking to be able to do. (once I actually sit down and do it, I'll let you know if it worked ;) )

Thanks so all who took the time to answer my questions. :-*
