I splurged on an Adaptec 2420. Its PCI-X at 133Mhz on the bus, does RAID 0, 1, 5 10 etc on 4 x 3Gb/s SATA II ports.
I stuck 4 x 400 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ES in an external case connected by external multilane connectors. (had to dump the 4 desktop drives I had as they didn't have enterprise specifications for read error timeouts and the controller didn't like them much)
In RAID 1 it totally flies. Using the blackmagic disk speed tool I get 265 MB/s read and 285 MB/s on the write!!!
Thats fast enough for uncompressed 10bit HD
In RAID 5 + 10 its still pretty respectable, but I'm haveing a few problems getting a verified volume in RAID 5.
Oh, now I'm certainly going to need that SDLT!
