28 Days Later

I finally go around to seeing this last night. Although I was a bit let down with the story (it had great potential). I was very impressed with how well the XL1s did. I watched the featurette on the DVD as well and saw the camera. It look like an XL1s on steroids. Looked like the mini35, it also had a nice mattebox, rods etc. The director went on to say, even with a $8 million dollar budget, he wanted to use dv, to give the film a gritty look. I'd say a profit of over 50 million, he succeeded very well.

Did anyone see this movie on the big screen? If so, how did it look?

Re: 28 Days Later

I only ever saw the trailer on the bigscreen. It looked ok. I too thought it held up really well on DVD.

Re: 28 Days Later

This is one of my favorite movies, didn't see it on the big screen though. With the exception of some of the exterior shots (sky) I thought it worked visually and definitely gave it its own feel, and even having in mind that it was DV, it was never a distraction for me. (imo anyway, the DVX with a Mini35 setup would have blown it away imo however, they used their own sort of rig for the PL mount on the XL1 from what I understand.)

Re: 28 Days Later

Also one of my favorite movies (the genre itself as well as it was done basically with tools I have in my possession minus the $100,000 in Prime lenses). The only thing missing in this for me is the lack of scope; like the opening to Dawn of the Dead 04. I know it was a low-budget but I would have been interested in seeing other pockets of survivors.

Also, the military sub-plot was kind of weak.

Im shooting a Zombie short this weekend and cant wait.

Re: 28 Days Later

You are shooting a zombie short John? Excellent. I can't wait to see it. I want to do one myself. Still working on script ideas.

Re: 28 Days Later

Yes I had heard about the sequel. I welcome it. I want to see a sequel to DOTD 04 though!

Yeah, Ive finished storyboarding and sent my brother to get liquid latex and makeup and fake blood supplies. :D

Re: 28 Days Later

DOTD '04 rocked!!! I can't wait for it on DVD. For me it is still the best movie of the year.

What length short are you doing John? I really want to see some DVX zombie horror. woot woot!!!

Re: 28 Days Later

if I ever win a DVXuser contest. That'll be my challenge. genre: horror zombie. mmmmmm imagine the fun that could be had.

Re: 28 Days Later

:D

NO ONE UNDERSTANDS THE PLIGHT OF THE zOMBIE jUNKIES!

Currently its going to be filmed in Episodic Installments; I envision a mulitude of series and a website for it. This way I can keep the characters fresh. Think of it as the prelimainary steps to an online ZOMBIE T.v. show (kind of) :P

Re: 28 Days Later

John, that's the coolest idea Ive ever heard! PLEASE go through with it!

OH DUDE, maybe you can invite other dvxusers to help out on a few eps? Maybe down the line others can write and direct eps! OMG!

dude, u must make this show happen :o

Re: 28 Days Later

In fact, that is what I was already thinking. This weekend is a 'rough-draft' of sorts. To be taken very serious. Im gauging time needed ,resources, make-up effects on camera, etc etc.

I am striving for the highest possible production value given my resources and experience.

But most def. Hell yeah! That would be great to have contibuting episodes! Zombies are huge right now and I thought "I love the Genre.... might as well capitalize!"

Re: 28 Days Later

This wasn't shot with a 35mm adapter... It was shot only prime lenses...

I loved this movie also. I thought it looked amazing for a digital movie. I only saw a few shots where it really took me out of the movie and made me yuk over a home video'ish look (when they used too wide of a lens on Selena in too dim lit room). I thought the military sub plot was awesome. I liked the idea of it changing conflict to man vs. man rather than man vs. infected....

Re: 28 Days Later

I saw it the very first day it came out, because it looked original to me, its almost like a sub-genre in its own way

Luved it

Re: 28 Days Later

Yep I saw it too, when it first came out I didn't even notice at all it was video but that was awhile back ago and was still quite ignorant about that but I've learned. But then they released it again with alternate endings but I missed seeing it again so I had to wait for the DVD, but not no more went and got it. Great flick by the way. My fav. scene has to be the underground tunnel or under the bridge scene you know where all the cars just abandoned, then the rats are running away then the zombies rush after them. Totally blew me away.

Re: 28 Days Later

That underground tunnel scene was rockin. I read where they filmed it with the 'Zombies' actually running away from the Camera towards the Lights to give the illusion that they were getting larger on the Tunnel walls. You see, as filmmakers, we would have stopped everyone and said "Wait! They're running away!" LOL

I also loved the scene where the were running up the stairwell. Pretty suspensful.

There are some shots on the Freeway (When they are cruising to the Military) where it looks really like video.

Re: 28 Days Later

Check out American Cinematographer to see what the team did on 28days. First of all, to make sure that there is proper exposure. They shot sky plates to put in on those scenes where he is walking through London. We all know how well DV handles white. Not to mention the transfer was done in a specific way to get that look. I hate when films like this get praise for the "all they did was shoot with an XL1 and got that great look" attitude. It is not pick up an Xl1, shoot, and you have shots that look like 28days, more like full frontal. Dancer in the Dark same thing, shot on a PD150, sure but was also modified with 35mm anamorphic lenses.

All I am saying that it is not just shoot and there you have it. I am sure you all know this so I will stop now.

Respectfully,
