25pa pal thin v detail freq. flickering image?

Hi All,

I posted about this also in the final cut forum, just thought it might actually be connected more with the cinematography side of things...

I 'll just paste my other text in here, hope i'm not breaking any board rules, it's quite urgent to find out the origin of the problem...

just captured my first F6 25pa (Pal) footage and it looks a bit strange, blurred, out of focus and the contures aren't clear, they are kind of flickering.

Not sure whether this is cause I shot it out of focus ( the focus numbers seemded right, the shots are all between 5- 15 metres distance no CU's) and did something else wrong or if I have to use some special settings in my preferences and this bad result is normal.

I found a posting on the board with this link that has a screen shot of the audio video preferences. It says to use for NTSC:

Sequence Preset: DV NTSC 48 kHz - 23.98

capture preset: DV NTSC 48 kHz Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldown Removal

Device Control Preset: FireWire NTSC NDF

Well, I am in PAL land and can find neither the equivalent option for pal nor these NTSC settings in my final cut preferences. I ve got final cut 3, is that the reason? Do i need fc4?

Or does anyone have any advice, experienced sth similar?

summary: I shot F6, 25p, PAL, manuel iris, 1/50 shutterspeed,
ND 1/8 and 1/64

Thanks a lot!

I'll be shooting tomorrow again, so any quick responses are appreciated...

then after researching a bit i added:

I played it on a standard TV monitor (50i), it doesn't look like out of focus but there is still this flickering...
Now I read in the manual that with F6 the V-detail frequency is set to thin, which means that only in an progressive environment the picture will be displayed properly, by selecting thin or mid as the item's setting.

So does this mean that final cut 3 at least if captured normally, is not a progressive environment and therefore flickering occurs on the horizontal lines and on the diagonal lines near the horizontal?

Also I used the letterbox setting and the top horizontal black line is also flickering or doesn't look 100 % 'stable',  also on the cameras lcd. once captured normally into fc3 it is stable. the shots are tripos shots, especially once something moves through the frame it just doesn't seem very clear in it's contures, they are flickering a lot...

otherwise, the focus distance was quite big, 5-15 metres with numbers like 70-99, it was so bright that i had to use nd 1/8 and even sometimes 1/64, the biggest aperture was 6.8, most of the time i used f 11 or even f 16, so in theory the dof should be huge and i am not usually clumsy with the focusing at all...

Barry, if you read this post, please let me know what you think about this, you seem to be the one that knows this stuff so well!

i am gonna testshoot now with thin and thick detail frequencies and see if that's the point.

is it me being clumsy? using the camera wrong? is it display, capture, progressive environment stuff or is it the camera itself that is defect?

any further advice, comments are very welcome!

thanks!

Re: 25pa pal thin v detail freq. flickering image?

If you're staying in video then you should probably stick with thick lines. Use thin if you planned to go to film. As it is you may need to add some vertical blur.

Go through your different prefs and if there's an option for dominant fields choose None if given the option since you're in progressive.

Make sure playback is set to best quality and that you're displaying the image at 100%

Also make sure you;re not use White Balance tracking. Just presets.
