im very happy with my Azden SGM-2X. It can be used as a handheld mic, unidirectional, or shotgun.

sennheiser mkh 405 or 406. comes rarely on ebay, but good cardioid mic. needs bass cut added, but pattern makes it forgiving in inexperienced hand. quiet and smooth.(maybe add a touch of presence in edit). Probably one of my favorite purchases ever. 20 years old and sounds better than many new mics.
