25 Hour Render times & I'm not impressed w/Vegas 6

So I'm rendering a less than FOUR minute video (yeah, it's got a few Magic Bullet tracks), and Vegas 5 is estimating nearly 25 hours total render time ... and, my PC's maxed out at 100%, with Vegas taking up a consistant 99%.

I've got a decent system: 64 bit AMD 3500+, 2GB PC3200 DDRAM, 128 MB ATI 9800 Pro video card, Platinum whatever mother board, 2x250GB Raid striped hard drives, etc.

I've heard that Magic Bullet was a pig, but isn't this rediculous?

The reason I'm rendering in 5 and not 6, is I just rendered a video last night in 6 (yes, seemingly much faster renders) and when I went to watch it today, noticed that the film effect was frozen (i.e. no flicker, no hair dust movements, etc ... just looked like a screen shot over the image). When I went into the Vegas 6 timeline, even when I move the cursor line from one end of the effected clip to the other, there was no change. The veg file was created in 5, so I went back to 5 to check it out, and worked as it was supposed to?

In addition to wanting to lock up, etc., has anyone else experienced weird effect issues with 6? I'm kind of afraid to rely on it, and start a project in it, until I see a more stable release.

You have something going on or you have 2 many effects going on. I do notice if you render to dvd architech 24p mpeg2 the render time drops to a 4th of what it takes to render any other type of file except for WMV and a few others. But then again I am working mostly with 24pa footage. I am usually not so lucky to render something so small, but I can render an hour of edited footage in about 6 hours. Now I do not use magic bullet at all. So it might be the culprit.

I have the same problem with 6. Film effects just look like a screen shot with no movement. In 5 they work fine. Anyone know why or have a fix?

This is a known bug, checkout the sony forums, I originally posted it a couple of hours after Vegas 6 was released!

No fix at present.

There's quite a few effects that have some major bugs in them which will hopefully be fixed very soon. Again checkout the sony forums for more info.

Glad I'm not the only one with the effects bug. I was at least going to use 6 for rendering the veg files, but not after what I saw it do to that last video with the film effect.

As far as effects, yep I've got a lot of them .... and several different video tracks with Magic Bullet on each one of them. They're high energy video montages for a High School DVD year book.

You can check out a ROUGH Draft of it at the following (Magic Bullet not used in rough): www.eefilm.com/impact/schools/evergreen/ehsdraft.wmv

Envision,

I haven't upgraded to 6 yet (doing the usual "microsoft" thing and waiting for the first round of patches). But, a few things to look for that may improve your rendering speed:

Is everything installed on a drive other than the drive your OS is running on? (i.e. most computers run Windows on drive c:, have you loaded Vegas and all of your clips and temp directories and such to run on a separate physical drive (not just a partition on the main drive)? This will speed up your rendering, because of the way Windows prioritizes reads and writes to c:. Another thing to check is what else is loading on your computer and how it effects performance. I recently switched over to the AOL versions of McAfee VirusScan and Anti-spyware, and they significantly slowed my system down. I went to the retail versions and performance peaked back up. But, you may want to unplug your Internet connection and disable the AV and AS software before you start your render. (Another benefit to this is that your system may also be downloading updates during your render, which will also slow things down signficantly.) You can also go into task manager and raise the priority of Vegas while rendering to improve performance.

BTW, all of this suggestions are AYOR. They worked for me on my system, they may not work on yours. Also, be sure to re-enable your AV and AS before reconnecting your Internet connection.

envision, some quick questions about your system, Does it display smoothly when previewing (at best quality) footage in an external moniter? Just asking because a computer store where I live has a system on sale almost like yours execpt just 1gig of ram and only 1 250gb hard drive. Are you satisfied with your systems performance besides the issue you had with the Vegas 6 program?

Magic Bullet is your culprit. I mean this literally -- you should set it up to render and leave for the weekend; it will take days. This is just the nature of it.

25 HOURS FOR 4 MINUTES?

I know MB is a burro but that is sounding bizarre. That 1:15 Green Screen test I did took 15 minutes. I'm on XEON's. When previewing FX and Tranny's oginating in Vegas it is super real-time (virtaully) and when applying MB I have to make the window very small to get fluidity. Nevertheless, 25 hours for 4 minutes? Are you making Toy Story 3?

Yes, we mods all love Vegas. Something sounds fishy with such a long render and a decent computer. Maybe you're trying to do things with MB that would be much better done directly in Vegas. The color correction plugins plus an additional semi-transparent gaussian blurred layer will give you an incredibly wide range of color grading and diffusion effects. Are you chaining multiple MB plugs on a single event?

Well, we’re all mods on a board for a camera which shoots 24p, which is why we all love it. And nothing handles 24p better than Vegas. So, it’s a natural outcome . . .

Even if there’s only one MB effect on a single track, if you’ve got it on more than one track at the same point on the timeline (say, with a partial transparency, or picture-in-picture/split screen, etc.), then you’re doubling the bear of a render time. Sounds like there might be even more than two at play here, with transparency and/or resizing going on. Ouch ouch ouch ouch.

well actually, i have similar rendertimes with MB and vegas. i shot a 6 minute video, that took 26 hours.... so i believe him. But my computer is WAY slower than his. 2.7 ghts and like 512 ram. ITs ok... but i get realllly choppy previews, i ahve to keep it in Draft quality all the time.

Just wondering if this would work, when done with your edited footage (if you had a fast enough computer) record to tape with DVX at best quality then dump the edtited footage back into your computer. Now it will be just one clip and it should render way faster then 26 hours.

Would this work or would the footage be degraded, (editited footage to tape then back into computer and finally to dvd)?

Couldn't you press record on the DVX while previewing it in best quality? Or create a daisy chain if that didn't work because of the firewire. Instead of preview to external monitor go from Pc to dvx to mini dv camcorder and press record on that.

I'm not sure. Maybe. But your preview isn't going to be real-time (no computer will do that with what he's got on there), so it's not going to do you any good.

yea it wouldnt work, if the computer was fast enough to handle a realitime preveiw, rendering would take like 20 minutes. so it would be pointless to go through all that. I just started avoiding magic bullet and use the standard Colorcorrectors and Saturation adjusments. I mean certain things you can only do with MB, like the Mexicali lok, or Pastel cuban. ( or maybe i havent figured it out on veg yet) but for basic contrast boost, and stuff, Veg is the way to go.

PS i found a shorcut, if your work has lots of titiles, and compositing, render it as an AVI or to a new track, then cut it where it the scenes change if necceaary, then hit it with MB. it somehow, renderes quicker if it doesnt have to bother with compositng and titiles AND MB looks. I can cut 6 hours off that way. But this only really owrks if you hav MAssive amounts of compositing. Like i made a Video art piece, with 9 streams of video, chopped togther on screen at the same time + MB. ( this is the one that took, 26 hours)

I recut it, and i did the MB seperate, the over all time was less.

You should check for trojans and such that may be running in the background. If I were you, check your apps running/services running, and stop all of all those that do not apply. I doubt Vegas is your culprit.
